Mumbai attack: 'British men among terrorists'
Source: Daily Telegraph UK

Last Updated: 1:14PM GMT 28 Nov 2008

Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Mumbai, was reported to have said that two British-born Pakistanis were among eight gunmen seized by Indian commandos who stormed buildings to free hostages.

The Foreign Office said it was investigating reports on NDTV, a local television news channel, that the terrorists – who swarmed into luxury hotels and other tourist sites in the city – included "British citizens of Pakistani origin".

Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, said the Government had "no knowledge" of any British suspects.

"We will do anything we can to help Indian authorities through what is obviously a very difficult time," Miss Smith said. "We will do what is necessary. At the moment the priority is to support the immediate needs.

Earlier on Friday, Gordon Brown said he "would not want to be drawn into early conclusions" over the claims.

The Prime Minister called for international co-ordination to combat terrorism in the wake of the attacks, which he called "atrocious". He said: "We have got to look at how international action against terrorism can be improved."

"Obviously when you have terrorists operating in one country, they may be getting support from another country or coming from another country, and it is very important that we strengthen the co-operation between India and Britain in dealing with these instances of terrorist attacks," he told Sky News.

The Prime Minister's comments came as Indian commando troops cleared the last terrorists from buildings across Mumbai.

Mumbai attacks: How young Britons are radicalised in Pakistan

Reports that some of the terrorists who attacked Mumbai were British has focused attention on the UK Muslims who receive military training at extremist madrassas in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In this report, filed three years ago, Telegraph correspondents expose how young Britons travel to al-Qaeda camps to learn how to destroy the West.

2. British-Born Pakistanis....to be precise.

British-born Pakistanis were among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources claimed today, as the death toll rose to more than 140.

Two Britons were among eight gunmen captured by commandos after they stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages, the city's chief minister said.

Vilasrao Deshmukh also revealed that up to 25 terrorists were responsible for the series of bomb blasts and shootings that targeted tourists and foreign interests.

If they were American citizens who's family originally came from Scotland, would you call them "American born Scots"? Or American citizens with Scottish Ancestry?

Edit: to fix typo

4. and funded and armed by the US
for many, many years.....all because of India's non-alignment strategy, and cosyness with the Soviets. What a historical clusterf*ck

and now its painfully obvious that in fact the US and India have a lot more in common than just about any other country in the region, a massive english speaking, secular, functioning democracy with a free media and checks and a mostly tolerant society, taking hits in the midst of a region full of $hitholes/totalitarian regimes/oneparty states.

These attacks will no doubt push India to the right, and probably bring back the fundamentalist Hindu based party, the BJP, back into power.

8. Mostly tolerant society?
is it why in the recent news the indian boy was thrown under a train because he didn't belong to the right caste?

I would treat India with a lot of suspicion, it is not so black and white as everybody pretends.

14. Brown "refrained from straightforwardly denying reports of the involvement of two British Nationals"
I guess it's a wait and see thing. It wouldn't surprise me in the least, though, if it was true...

Brown anxious over Mumbai attacks

Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai, Nov 29: The recent terror attack in Mumbai has made UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown quite restless due to reports indicating British-born Pakistanis’ involvement in the horrible assault.

Commenting on the British link to Mumbai attacks, Brown assured that the investigation was ‘on’ and it was quite early to reach any conclusion. He, however, refrained from straightforwardly denying reports of the involvement of two British nationals in the attack.

The UK, the US’ closest ally in ‘war on terror’, has also sent a team of Scotland Yard detectives to India to assist the investigations into the attacks that left 160 people killed and at least 327 injured.

According to a news agency, Brown said on Friday that he had talked to the Indian PM "very recently" and expressed solidarity.

"At no point has the Prime Minister of India suggested to me that there is evidence at this stage of any terrorist of British origins," he said.

"But obviously there are huge investigations that are being done and I think it would be premature to draw any conclusions at all," Brown said.

11. Militants say they belong to Pakistan-based group ( WATER BOARDING ? )

NEW DELHI–Three of the militants who attacked India's financial capital have confessed they are members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group, the Hindu newspaper reported today.

snip

Lashkar-e-Taiba denied yesterday it had any role in the attacks, which also targeted a popular cafe, a Jewish centre and the city's main railway. But Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said the assault was carried out by groups based outside India, usually an allusion to India's nuclear-armed neighbour Pakistan.

One of the militants was a resident of Faridkot in Pakistan's Punjab province, the Hindu newspaper said, citing unidentified police investigators.

snip

The Indian Express newspaper said the group left the Pakistani port city of Karachi by sea and transferred to two small boats or rubber dinghies off Mumbai. They were seen by several residents coming ashore but allayed suspicion by saying they were students, it said.

The Times of India said the attackers were aged between 18 and 25. Each was given "an AK-47 assault rifle with two magazines each, one pistol and eight to 10 grenades suspected to have manufactured at a Pakistan ordnance factory."
The equipment, training and sophistication of their planning would tend to indicate a Pakistani link," wrote strategic affairs analyst K. Subrahmanyam in the Times of India.

Lashkar-e-Taiba, along with another group, Jaish-e-Mohammed, made its name fighting Indian rule in disputed Kashmir, where state elections are underway. Both groups were closely linked in the past to the Pakistani military's powerful Inter-Services Intelligence agency, the ISI.

They were also blamed for an attack on India's parliament in 2001 which brought the two countries close to a fourth war since independence from Britain 60 years ago.
