Sept. 11 Panel Rips Lack of Cooperation
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-2885556,00.html

By LAURENCE ARNOLD

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Short on time and patience, leaders of the independent commission studying the Sept. 11 attacks released a status report Tuesday that singled out government departments, including Defense and Justice, that they said were not cooperating fully.

Republican Thomas H. Kean and Democrat Lee Hamilton, chairman and vice chairman of the 10-member National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, said they took the unusual step because the Bush administration's level of cooperation during the next few weeks will determine whether the panel can write a thorough report by its May 2004 deadline.

But some victims' advocates who pressed for the commission's creation said the commission started late, has been stonewalled by government agencies and seems destined to produce a document that lacks specific answers about how and why the events of Sept. 11 happened.

``Let's extend this investigation,'' said Kristen Breitweiser, whose husband Ronald died at the World Trade Center. ``Let's do it thoroughly. Let's get all the documents needed. Let's let no branch or agency of government drag its feet and run out the clock.''

1. Not to belittle another tragedy...
...but I'm willing to bet more time and money has gone into the Columbia investigation than 9/11, it doesn't make sense.

Something stinks here, folks, and it doesn't make you a bad American to demand an answer. We owe those poor souls that much.

2. WHATCHA GONNA DO? Huh?
As Aaron McGruder said on Donahue, this administration is like a bunch of gangsters, just being as bad as they can be, going 'Now what, punk? Whatcha gonna do 'bout it?"

And everyone kind of stands around looking pathetic.

So I want to hear what they're going to do. Don't just complain, do something, yo.
Though, it's good to hear from Breitweiser again.

4. What would have to happen, what would it take for the American
people to demand answers from those who represent the government of the people, by the people, and for the people? Please excuse the sacrilege.

6. The commission has subpoena power...
... and they aren't using it. That should say something. Nor are they taking testimony under oath. That should say something, too.

9. Kean may actually come through on this
No, really. For a Republican, he is not such a bad guy. Maybe not up there with Warren Rudman, who is predicting that there will undoubtedly be another major terrorist attack on the US which will show how poorly funded Homeland Security really is, but Kean is a moderate Northeastern Republican with no major scandals to his name.

It takes six votes for the evenly split bipartisan panel to issue a subpoena. Shrubbie is counting on party-line votes. Could Kean come through as the sixth vote? He doesn't seem to be highly partisan to me. Besides, he may just recognize that this commission could put him in the history books as having done the right thing for the country.
