CINCINNATI -- Those working in the retail business are feeling the financial pinch.

A representative for Dillard's department said they will eliminate about 500 jobs, NewsChannel5 sister station WCPO-TV reported.

About 60,000 people are employed by the department store nationwide.

Dillard's stock closed down 5 cents on Friday.

2. A good place to start on their firing list should be the people who have directed store policy
in trying to intimidate some of their customers based on their racial profiles. It's a nation-wide problem, and they've sinned against the area I live in, again and again and again, each time claiming they are sorry when they are exposed on tv by new targets of their bigotry.

If they're so worried their store could be losing money due to shop lifting, why don't they go wild and hire adequate sales personel rather than letting their enforcers chase customers around the store, humiliating them publicly? No doubt that costs them more than they could ever lose to shoplifters in the numbers of people who vow and keep their vow never to shop there again.

5. Don't tell me they're going after people for Shopping While Black?
Couldn't happen to nicer people. I have sisters who lost jobs with them in earlier downsizings.

3. 500 out of 60,000 jobs is
probably less than their monthly turnover. Unless a zero or two is missing from the jobs cut number.

4. Cutting jobs going into the holiday season is a signal of
looming disaster.

6. At least as far as that one chain is concerned,
Dillard's, it's a fraction of one percent of the jobs. As I said, that's got to be less than their usual monthly turnover is.

I realize a lot of companies are cutting back right now, and laying off right before the holiday season is absolutely nothing new, and has been going on for a couple of decades now in this country. Reaganomics is, in my opinion, the original villain here. That, and the stupid idea that the rank and file worker force can be cut back and cut back so as to maintain profits AND huge salaries/bonuses at the top. Jobs are being outsourced, such as reading xrays, that a very few years ago no one would have thought could be outsourced. Look forward to the day when WalMart and McDonald's are fully automated, not a living, breathing employee in sight. All the stocking will be done overnight by machinery, all the check-outs will be do-it-yourself. And the programming of those machines will be done somewhere that programmers are willing to work for seven bucks an hour.

7. That turnover would be the people at the bottom
this lay off is probably either store level management, or people employed by the company NOT at stores. (i.e. the corporate office)
