US retail sales slip, jobless claims rise

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US retail sales fell in January as car-buying skidded, and weekly jobless claims rose, data showed, casting uncertainty over the economic pace in early 2004.

Retail sales -- accounting for one-third of US economic activity -- fell 0.3 percent and vehicle sales slumped by an 11-month record 3.9 percent, the Commerce Department (news - web sites) said Thursday.

It was the first decline in sales in four months.

A separate report showed the number of new US unemployment benefit claimants grew 6,000 to 363,000 last week, casting further gloom over the sluggish labor market.

2. And one newspaper says that Greenspan
said that Bush's plan for jobs is realistic.

It's time for Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld and Greenspan to be on the unemployed roles.

3. This economy is booming! Now all he has to do is create
350,000 jobs each month for the rest of the year. Piece of cake. He can do that with one billionaire tied behind his back.
