BUSH A NO-SHOW AT ALABAMA BASE, SAYS MEMPHIAN
BUSH A NO-SHOW AT ALABAMA BASE, SAYS MEMPHIAN
FedEx Pilot Bob Mintz, backed up by a Carolina colleague, recalls no Dubya at Dannelly AFB in 1972.

MEMPHIS – Two members of the Air National Guard unit that President George W. Bush allegedly served with as a young Guard flyer in 1972 had been told to expect him and were on the lookout for him. He never showed, however; of that both Bob Mintz and Paul Bishop are certain.

The issue of Bush’s presence in 1972 at Dannelly Air National Guard base in Montgomery, Alabama – or the lack of it – has become an issue in the 2004 presidential campaign.

Recalls Memphian Mintz, now 63: “I remember that I heard someone was coming to drill with us from Texas. And it was implied that it was somebody with political influence. I was a young bachelor then. I was looking for somebody to prowl around with.” But, says Mintz, that “somebody” -- better known to the world now as the president of the United States -- never showed up at Dannelly in 1972. Nor in 1973, nor at any time that Mintz, a FedEx pilot now and an Eastern Airlines pilot then, when he was a reserve first lieutenant at Dannelly, can remember.

“And I was looking for him,” repeated Mintz, who said that he assumed that Bush “changed his mind and went somewhere else” to do his substitute drill. It was not “somewhere else,” however, but the 187th Air National Guard Tactical squadron at Dannelly to which the young Texas flyer had requested transfer from his regular Texas unit – the reason being Bush’s wish to work in Alabama on the ultimately unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign of family friend Winton "Red" Blount.

52. In my best Rove imitation I'd say we're ready
for another orange alert -- no better not, people are catching on the that ruse. Let me see, how about another little war -- no, people are still demanding answers about why we went to war the last time. Let's see, what will work to take attention away from AWOL 's awol problem? Oh dummy me, why didn't I think of this right away -- a SEX SCANDAL. Of course, the American sheeple never tire of sex and titillation and it's especially good if it includes adultery and interns and democrats. Look over here America -- SEX, KERRY, SEX, INTERN -- good people.

66. Sure hope Mintz doesn't lose his job at FedEx. Keep an eye on it.
Bush will not come clean...that's the issue. These Rethugs won't own up to their shortcomings but can berate anyone else who "won't take responsibility for their actions." They will try to attack Kerry for speaking out against the war when he returned home. But it is much more admirable and responsible to tell the truth, and change your mind when you find out that your were wrong or that things are not as you were told they were. Only the mindless soldiers who suffered in silence seeing their buddies killed and maimed in a needless war based on lies (both Viet Nam and Iraq) who will not even now say it was a mistake to kill and be killed will resent Kerry for this. That bullshit "honor code" in not real honor...truth is honor and humility is leadership.

Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 05:17 PM by DemoTex
Mintz: “I remember that I heard someone was coming to drill with us from Texas. And it was implied that it was somebody with political influence."

The unit is customarily given a heads-up on anyone coming around with any links to the press or to Washington, DC. Bu$h wasn't going to sign in at the AANG "cold turkey."

This is good news, but I do spot one potential contradiction in the piece. It says that Mintz, 63, is a Fedex pilot. Airline pilots have a mandatory retirement age of 60. My guess is that Mintz, who most likely got a relatively late start at Fedex after Eastern folded, elected to downgrade to flight engineer. Flight engineers can continue flying past 60. This could be seen as a way to enhance his retirement benefits. Not many pilots ever do this because A. there aren't that many 3-person crew aircraft left nowadays, and B. most pilot egos cannot withstand the move from the grand and glorious seat of the captain to the engineers side-saddle seat behind the pilots .. pilots who are usually considerably younger.

38. new: AL commander sez Bush didn't show up
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 05:52 PM by grasswire
I started a thread in GD based on a story from the Birmingham News:

Bush did not receive military pay from May to September of 1972, according to the documents, and the former commander of the 9921st Air Reserve Squadron said Tuesday that Bush didn't show up during those months.

"He never did come to my squad," said retired Lt. Col. Reese Bricken, who lives in Montgomery. "He was never at my unit."

Bricken reviewed documents Tuesday showing Bush's transfer request to his squadron and his response to the request. He said he remembered sending approval back for him to serve in the small unit, made up of reserve members who met weekly.

"He was looking for a place to hang his hat, but he never came by," Bricken said.

Whenever I wade into that sad little place, I always picture a bunch of young guys making no better than average wages, blowing off steam after groveling to their bosses all day by gathering together on the internet and reafirming their delusions. They will always serve. They will never make it to the top. Because they will never think for themselves. They are sad little thralls the Bushes of the world step on to get where they are going. The thing they will never get is, the Bushes of the world know damned well what is going on, they do think for themselves. They lie deliberately, not because they are morons. Make that morans.

59. Yes! CBS was the "Flavor to Savor" tonight. Better than other Networks!
They covered the USA TODAY article and what Burkett said about Chimp.

64. Tricia Nixon
Funny to see he hung around with her. I would love to hear what she has to say about him!
Didn't she invite Grace Slick to the White House? Then Gracie came up with a plan to drop acid in Trickie Dick's tea.
