McCain wins Missouri in close race against Obama (final EV: Obama 365 McCain 173)
Source: AP

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican John McCain has defeated President-elect Barack Obama in Missouri — the last state to be decided in the 2008 presidential election.

McCain's narrow victory over Obama breaks a bellwether streak in which Missourians had picked the winning presidential candidate in every election since 1956.

With all jurisdictions reporting complete but unofficial results, McCain led Obama by 3,632 votes Wednesday out of more than 2.9 million cast — a margin of 0.12 percentage points.

...

Obama won 365 electoral votes. Missouri's 11 electoral votes will give McCain 173.

13. well, at least it was uber close in the final count!
nice to see it literally be so close - Obama knew he had chances in a lot of places some of us (me) didn't think he did, like Indiana.

6. So which is the new bellwether state?
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 04:06 PM by nyc 4 Biden
There has to be a state that now holds the longest streak of picking the POTUS correctly.

ETA:

Found it on Wiki (Ohio):

If Missouri turns out to be in the losing column of the 2008 presidential election, either or both Nevada or Ohio will unseat Missouri as the bellwether state of America. While Nevada will have fewer misses, Ohio will have a longer hit streak and was closer to predicting the correct popular vote figures in both 2004 and 2008. Although Delaware and New Mexico have missed the electoral college vote twice, they each missed the popular vote only once since 1952 and 1912, respectively.

The American bellwether states are <1>:
Nevada - 1 miss (1976) from 1912 on (96.0%), perfect since 1980
Ohio - 2 misses (1944, 1960) from 1896 on (93.1%), perfect since 1964
Missouri - 2 misses (1956, 2008) from 1904 on (92.6%), perfect from 1960 to 2004
New Mexico - 2 misses (1976, 2000) from 1912 on (92%), perfect from 1912 to 1972
Tennessee - 2 misses (1960, 2008) from 1928 on (90.5%), perfect from 1964 to 2004
Delaware - 2 misses (2000, 2004) from 1952 on (86.7%), perfect from 1952 to 1996

10. Which states come in last since say 1900 like the above.
My guess is it would be a New England state like MA, VT, or RI as they are very partisan, hence likely to miss all the R wins.

15. I predicted a win of about 200 EVs
That would have been 369 to 169. 365 to 173 is close. What am I off by? 4 out of 538? That's 0.7%. I confess I overestimated the popular vote differential. I thought it would be over 10%. I'm no psychic. I'm just good at predicting things.

By the way, no flying cars. At least not flown by humans. Computer-controlled flying cars, maybe, if they can make the software reliable enough (not soon). This prediction is based on having seen humans drive cars on roads where they only have to deal with 2 dimensions. That frequently results in carnage. Add a third dimension and you'd have flaming car parts raining down on our cities.

19. I wonder how much that's gonna cost Missouri?
The state's Congressional delegation is almost evenly split D/R now. Does anyone think the state will suffer in the form of less funding and/or fewer services from Congress and the Executive Branch?

I know for a fact that the Bush Administration was extremely punitive against those states and other entities which did not support them, but I have a hard time believing that the Obama team and a solid Democratic Congress will play the same game. Nevertheless, any time there is a tie-breaker on any issue regarding Missouri and another state which voted for Obama, I think the winner will be the other state.
