Stop spread of nukes, Bush urges
President Bush yesterday laid out a proposal to enact a series of stringent new safeguards to prevent the global proliferation of atomic weapons, demanding that "the civilized world" crack down on the black-market trade in nuclear material and technology.

"There is a consensus among nations that proliferation cannot be tolerated. Yet, this consensus means little unless it is translated into action," the president said in a speech at the National Defense University in Fort McNair in Washington. "Every civilized nation has a stake in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction," he added.

Mr. Bush called on foreign leaders to employ intelligence to "find the middlemen, the suppliers and the buyers" of nuclear material; to enact strict export controls and to secure all materials within their borders; and to close a "loophole" that allows nations such as North Korea and Iran to produce nuclear material that can be used to build bombs under the cover of civilian nuclear programs.

2. I agree
So let's set an example for the rest of the world and reduce our nuclear arsenal by 50%. Don't worry, we'd still be able to blow up the world several times over again.

4. Putin gives a hearty F-U to Bush
Russia said on Thursday it planned to sign a deal with Iran next month to ship nuclear fuel for Iran's power plant, defying U.S. pressure on Moscow to sever nuclear ties with the Islamic Republic.

Tehran and Moscow have been locked in months of tough talks over nuclear shipments for the $800 million Bushehr plant Russia has helped to build despite repeated U.S. accusations that Iran is secretly trying to acquire nuclear arms.

"I think in about two weeks all outstanding issues will be settled, that is, by the end of February," Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev told reporters.

He said he hoped to sign the final document, which also requires Iran to return spent nuclear fuel to Russia, during a visit to Tehran in late March.

"The United States has criticized us and will continue to criticize us," Rumyantsev said. "They say Iran seeks nuclear weapons under the cover of our peaceful technology transfer."

6. Funny how bush gives other nations the #1reason to HAVE nukes
Iraq: no nukes, no chemical/bio weapons --> Invasion.

N. Korea: nukes --> Diplomacy.

It's a very simple line of reasoning the administration is using, and it's fairly obvious from Iran's mad scramble that world leaders have figured it out.
