Anchorage Daily NewsUnlike the flip-flopping race for U.S. Senate, there really wasn't any doubt after Election Day on who won Alaska's sole seat in the U.S. House. It still took Democratic candidate Ethan Berkowitz until this afternoon, with the counting of another big batch of ballots, to concede defeat to Republican Don Young.
The new count: 137,745 votes for Berkowitz and 154,461 for Young. With the Alaskan Independence Party candidate, Don Wright, factored in, the vote breaks down this way: 50 percent for Young, 45 percent for Berkowitz, and 5 percent for Wright.
Berkowitz congratulated Young and his wife, Lu, on a 19th term in Congress.
But he also noted that he got more votes than any Democrat challenging Young in the state's history. While Democrat Diane Benson made a good run in 2006, in the three general elections before that, Young claimed 70 percent of the vote or better. Still, one Democrat came closer than Berkowitz in terms of the percentage of the total. Back in 1990, former Valdez Mayor John Devens nearly squeaked by the incumbent, taking 48 percent of the vote in a two-way race.
