Pig lard to stop terror attacks
From correspondents in Jerusalem
February 12, 2004

ISRAELI police have come up with plans to place bags of pig lard on buses in a bid to deter Palestinian militants from carrying out suicide attacks, the Maariv daily reported.

Rabbinical authorities have given the idea its approval on the grounds that it could be a life-saving measure even though pigs are also considered impure by Jews.

Authorities believe that the move could discourage Palestinians from carrying out attacks as pieces of their exploded body could come into contact with the pig fat, prejudicing their chances of entering into paradise.

The paper said that the rabbinical dispensation could mean that security forces also hang bags of lard in shopping malls and schools.
Public buses have been a favourite target for Palestinian suicide bombers since the start of the intifada in September 2000.

1. Wow!
Use someone's fanatical religious beliefs against them! What a great idea. Now if only we could convince the right wing that God doesn't want them to vote.

10. Actually, there is a protestant Christian sect that does that

In recent years, they have modified their position somewhat, from outright prohibition of voting to discouraging it.

Their argument is that voting gives importance to the earthly world of men, when only God's kingdom is important.

Their evangelical efforts concentrate heavily on Majority World populations, especially Africa and Latin America.

In the US, their work with Latin American immigrants has moved many conservatives to contribute financially to their activities, so impressed are they with the work they do.

4. I've heard somewhere that this tactic was used before
way back sometime. I'll have to try and find when and where it was but it stopped all resistence because if Muslims die with pig in them/ on them they believe they will not go to heaven.

hmmmmm I'll see if I can find the story.

29. You're thinking of the Sepoy Rebellion....
...At least that's what I thought of when I read the post. Muslim troops serving the British Raj back in 1850's (I think) were set off into open rebellion against their officers by a rumor that the grease they were given to grease their rifles was actually pig fat. This rumor wasn't the only thing to the rebellion--it was, I believe, just part of a whole complicated plot to overthrow British rule...but it ended in tremendous savagery on both sides. (Phrases like the Black Hole of Calcutta come from that period.)

I don't know WHAT that is...but it alarms me for reasons I cannot express.

Is the lard absolutely a no-no? Or can a suicide bomber get an exemption because his task is for the greater glory?

Since death by explosives strapped to one's torso is usually instantaneous, wouldn't the bomber technically be dead BEFORE any of his remnants could come in contact with the flying lard?

19. It is a popular misconception. There is no religion that I am aware of

that teaches that its followers will go to hell as a result of someone else's actions.

Anyone with serious questions about the theological soundness of such a notion can look it up, or talk it over with your local mosque, temple or church leaders.

The pig fat, or as the British used to do with "insurgent" Hindus in India, beef fat stuff is intended more to disgust the target population as well as demonstrate the aggressor's contempt, and frequently, as a bonus, ignorance.

In the case of a country with a large Jewish population, it is an especially silly idea.

Using separate buses to transport soldiers would be a much better option, IF the goal is to reduce attacks on buses that contain civilians.

9. This doesn't make much sense to me
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 11:39 AM by DeposeTheBoyKing
My understanding could be way off, but I don't think mere contact with pig flesh or products is forbidden; just ingestion of it. Otherwise, how could Muslims play football?

Also, Islam isn't as rigid as everyone would have you believe. If pork were absolutely the only food available and a person was starving, the person would be permitted to eat it.

8. if they actually think that will work
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 11:29 AM by enki23
they're stupid. most religious fanatics--especially the leaders among them--can, and regularly do, rationalize around any article of faith which hampers their ability to do what they want. religious principles are often little more than rationalizations for doing what one really wants to do in the first place.

it's silly, and stupid, and it will be completely impotent in stopping further attacks.

28. right on. If you can rationalise away
the prohibitions on suicide and murder, I don't think the pork thing is really going to be a big skicking point, do you? Also, this assumes th epeople involved in this activity are actually religious in the real sense, insteqd of brainwashed zombies.

I was just reading Baudolino, by Umberto Eco, and he paints this great picture of the Assasini, who were told they would reach paradise by killing and dying for their leader. Of course, there was no paradise, but they were convinced they had been there through the use of hallucinagens. Once the drugs were taken away, the only way to return to paradise was death. same idea.

It would be comical if it were not so serious.

Has it not occurred to the genius behind this that if Yahweh can
forgive a bit of pig lard in a good cause, so can Allah?

(OK, hands up ... who's just invested in pig lard producers? :-))

18. This will just make them madder...see India 1857
Indians working for the British Army, due to their deep traditions and faith faced numerous social barriers. In 1856 it was rumored that additional troops were to be recruited for service in Burma, where they could not follow all their religious rules, and that Christian missionary efforts among the troops were to receive official encouragement. The Zamindars (land owners) of the time wanted to protect their interests in the wake of land reforms by the British and funded anti-English activities.
The insurrection was triggered when the British introduced new rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with oil made from the fat of animals. The fat of sacred cows was taboo to Hindus while Muslims were repelled by pig fat.
