White powder sent to Mormon temples in Utah, LA
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES – Letters containing a suspicious white powder were sent Thursday to Mormon temples in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City that were the sites of protests against the church's support of California's gay marriage ban.

The temple in the Westwood area of Los Angeles was evacuated before a hazardous materials crew determined the envelope's contents were not toxic, said FBI spokesman Jason Pack.

The temple in downtown Salt Lake City, where the church is based, received a similar envelope containing a white powder that spilled onto a clerk's hand.

The room was decontaminated and the envelope taken by the FBI for testing. The clerk showed no signs of illness, but the scare shut down a building at Temple Square for more than an hour, said Scott Freitag, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

1. Anthrax is brown
and if it's weaponized and in a letter it doesn't spill in your hand; it literally explodes in your face.

21. The descriptions of the real anthrax sent to media after 9/11...
it was a white powder, and it affected those who merely touched the envelope, including a postal worker. It never exploded or anything. If I recall correctly, that was the description.

26. There are dozens of poisonous white powders out there outside of Anthrax
The thing is - whomever did this; regardless of their justification, should be tracked down and prosecutued. But then again I'm still waiting for them to track down the person who did this to Tom Daschle and over 250 Planned Parenthood clinics.

I'm slipping. I'm surprised that particular snark didn't jump into my head immediately. ;P

Also, given the hype over this sort of thing, I really wonder what sort of chaos the media would be thrown into if a package containing some color of powder other than white showed up. Entire news cycles would probably be spent speculating on what cosmic horror hides within say, blue powder, or paisley powder, or whatever.

Most angles on this particular story are ludicrous anyway.

13. I'm sure the media will blame this all on those wacky gays.
You know because gays, you see, are very prone to committing domestic terrorist acts against religious institutions. :sarcasm:

I seriously think though, this will be blamed on gay people. Just watch it happen.

17. That could very well be right, but can you personally vouch for every single one of the gays
in this country? I couldn't personally vouch for every person who lives on my block or guarantee that none of them would ever do anything bad or stupid under any circumstances. Straight or gay, people are people even in our DU tinfoil hat world.

Once they've got something they think they can sell, it's off to the races.

30. When you have an issue where emotions run as super high as this one
never preclude the possibility of someone doing something stupid and thinking they are doing something noble. The Obama headquarters in a small community near where I live had offensive graffiti written on its front windows on 2 occasions and there were suggestions that the Democrats had done it themselves, so that kind of accusation sounded very familiar to me.

You only ever see the fascist-grassroots staging false flags. Real minorities don't seem to seek anonymity when they express anger, only the fascist ilk.

27. It's wrong but then again I wonder if it was from the team we think it was
I mean the first assumption is it was someone upset about the results of Prop #8 and the Mormon Church's involvement with it.

But what if it wasn't?

What if it was someone who is glad Prop #8 passed and did this in order to make anti-Prop #8 people look bad.

That's the type of sick fucks that are out there.

Regardless of whose team this person plays for - this type of action is wrong even if it was just soap powder and a harmless hoax. I would hope we could track down this person and prosecute them, but we haven't found any of the other 'white powder letter' hoaxers eithers.

37. I agree
this is a form of terrorism. If envelopes of white powder had been sent to the Obama transition team, would we be as amused? I'm sure there are a lot of sickos out there just as upset over his election as we are about Prop H8.

I'm equally sure there would be a bunch of freeptards posting that Obama did this to himself to get sympathy. Let's see if we can avoid sinking to their level.

from what I see the gay community is really pissed at them ... I saw a couple of "Mormons = Nazis" graffitti, but nothing worst than that.

BTW, fake terrorists attacks attributed to the gay community is nothing new, I actually have a newsclip from 1984 on some wacko planting pipebombs at children's playgrounds and leaving signed statements claiming that the gay liberation army (or something like it) taking responiblity for it ... I'll try to find it and post it on youtube, it was really fake but I think the bombs were real.

All of the people here wondering if the Mormons did this themselves are being silly. I doubt if someone sent this to a Planned Parenthood you'd be assuming they sent it to themselves for attention.
