(Maine) Senate OKs sales of morning-after pill

AUGUSTA — The Senate gave preliminary approval Wednesday to a bill that would allow specially trained pharmacists to dispense so-called morning-after birth-control pills without a doctor's prescription.

The vote paved the way for action in the House of Representatives, which could take up the bill as soon as today. Passage of the bill would make Maine only the sixth state in the nation and the first in the Northeast to enact such a law.

Morning-after pills contain higher doses of the hormones found in regular birth-control pills and they prevent ovulation or fertilization.
