Bush moved to Alabama unit without Air Force permission

BY LARRY COHLER-ESSES AND BOB PORT
New York Daily News

NEW YORK - (KRT) - George W. Bush left his Texas Air National Guard assignment and moved to Alabama in 1972 even though the Air Force denied his request for a transfer, according to his military records.

...

McClellan would not even let the question be asked Wednesday. When a Daily News reporter tried several times to ask about the missed physical, McClellan said, "I'm not going to engage in gutter politics. I'm going to focus on what we're doing to make the world safer, to make the world a better place."

Lawrence Korb, a former assistant secretary of defense for personnel and a Navy flier in Vietnam, said a pilot losing his flight status was a serious matter.

"We spent $1 million to train him to fly," Korb said. "You're supposed to be ready to fly if we need you. If you didn't show up for your flight physical, good heavens!"

1. Scotty's gonna have such a BAD day tomorrow...
The WH Press Corps is going to slap him into a corner with all the new details that've come out tonight alone.

Too cool! :D

29. Yes, thank you so much.
Reading that transcript was the very finest moment I've had, thinking about this country, since Bush became the pResident.

CANNOT believe this is the same press group. Hope they all don't have accidents or commit suicide overnight, before the next briefing.

If only Ari could be the one facing the crowd tomorrow, rather than Scott McClellan.

17. Squeeze that monkey ...
... with the allegations of record cleansing prior to Bush run in 2000. I would like to know more!

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2004-02-11-bush-guard-usat_x.htm

WASHINGTON — As Texas Gov. George W. Bush prepared to run for president in the late 1990s, top-ranking Texas National Guard officers and Bush advisers discussed ways to limit the release of potentially embarrassing details from Bush's military records, a former senior officer of the Texas Guard said Wednesday.

19. Frankly I think this is fun and I really do not care if he was in or not
It is sure a nice pay back after the dirty things the GOP have done about war and being un-American and what they did to McCain. Some times the child like joy of revenge just can not leave you.I always liked it when Clinton would come out and re-butt the story that father Bush was saying about him or things when they ran. He, Clinton, would stand in front of some building in Little Rock and tell his side and I really liked that. The GOP always fight very dirty.

A pilot was something that would be good media for when they ran Junior in politics. But Junior was always a flunky his entire life living off the sweat of America!

5. I agree
I mean look at this white house - If there were a picture of * flying we would have seen it all over in TV ads in 2000.

They have * appear in every quasi-patriotic setting imaginable, yet no picture of him flying in the guard, no REAL PEOPLE who served with him, and on and on.

22. Right on and this also make the carrier thing so funny
He would be better off running with the turkey now. And that puts every pun you can think of in peoples mind. Just the words under that picture 'What a Turkey" would send even Republicans laughing. George must have dreamed that trip up. 'Poor George' as Ann Richards used to say.

6. AWOL is about to be proven without a doubt.
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 01:53 AM by SilasSoule
It may be time to start asking where he was for that year that he did not serve in Alabama. Do we want a leader who cannot account for his whereabouts or an entire year of his life? What happend that year George? We want accountability. Just come clean with the voters.

If it turns out that You were busted for cocaine and then had to do community service for that year you were AWOL so your daddy could pull strings to get your records scrubbed, THEN JUST COME OUT AND ADMIT IT!! Don't do what Clinton did and deny the inevitable, where the attempt at deception is worse than the misdeed itself. You could come on TV and do a teary-eyed Mea Culpa and maybe gain the benefit the Rush Limbaugh type wingnut base junkie sympathy effect.

15. Seems his private eye didn't find everything
I've always been suspicious about why Bush hired a private eye to look into HIS past to see what would be discovered about him.

You don't do that if you don't have something to hide.

Seems he missed the drunk driver conviction and some of the AWOL stuff.

You know when they start saying stuff like "gutter politics" we've got the goods on him.

that the'll crack and cave with contradiction after contradiction, to the point that they won't care anymore. Like, Ok, whatever, yeah, he was AWOL so what! get over it, were gonna steal the election anyway, so why do you in press even care.

9. Finally!
This story should have come out during the primary campaign of 2000. He's so protected by the media a common-knowledge bombshell like this takes three years to see the light of day. Oh well. One of the reasons I initially supported Clark had to do with his nomination forcing the AWOL issue. As it turns out the story surfaced anyway with a little help from Michael Moore. Hats off guys.

18. Scotty, does attacking another country w/o cause make the world "safer"
and "better?"

One hundred Iraqis died in the last 24 hours. I don't see "better" and "safe" in that scenario.

23. Looks like the press finally started reading awolbush.com
Gawd, it's taken long enough for them to get to this point. If this had happened back in the 2000 campaign, 3000 New Yorkers would still have their lives and we wouldn't be wondering who to bomb next.

25. according to the article
bush* was in Alabama to work on a political campaign...

soooooo, waaaay back then he was involved in politics

during the 2000 campaign, one of his talking points was how he WASN'T a political insider

ummmm...just my 2-cents - but when you work on political campaigns as much as he did (he also worked on his daddy's campaigns) and have the political connections... doesn't that kinda make you a political insider???

32. Did Peter Jennings know what he was doing?
Or was it just a wonderful gift by a clueless anchor who thought he could zing Mr. Clark?

I must say, without Mr. Jennings snide question in the debate a few weeks back, this would never have come to a head like this.

35. I think he did
I like Jennings the best of all the evening news anchors. It's clear he doesn't like Bush and has always made sarky asides and given skeptical looks when spouting the White House horseshit. I think Jennings interjected this topic in a very sneaky way that will keep him out of trouble with his bosses, and I for one thank him for it.

33. When I was in a ready reserve unit, one of my fellow officers was the son
of an extremely high-ranking flag officer. That son failed to complete and submit forms necessary to initiate a required background check. When repeated attempts to get the forms failed, his father was informed of these circumstances: a fellow reserve officer privy to that conversation averred the father replied simply with "kick him out" (of that unit). That father expected no less of his son than was required of all other officers in that program.
