White House Releases '73 Bush Dental Exam

Thursday February 12, 2004 3:01 AM
By DEB RIECHMANN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House late Wednesday released a copy of a dental evaluation President Bush had in the National Guard in Alabama during the Vietnam War to rebut suggestions from Democrats who have questioned whether the president ever showed up for duty there.

A copy of the dental examination done on Jan. 6, 1973, documents the president serving at Dannelly Air National Guard Base in Alabama, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in a statement. Bush completed most of his National Guard training in Texas, but in 1972 was allowed to leave and perform his duties in Alabama so he could work on a Senate political campaign.

The White House obtained the dental record, along with other medical records it did not release, from the Air Reserve Personnel Center in Denver, Colo., McClellan said. The record was accompanied by a statement from Dr. Richard J. Tubb, the president's current physician, who stated that he read Bush's records, which covered a period from 1968 to 1973, and concurred with the doctors' assertion that Bush was ``fit'' for service.

1. All this proves is that the taxpayer was paying for his dental work
It doesn't prove that he showed up and did his duty. His father's status as a congressman probably could have got him a filling at least, but his military ID would have gotten him into any clinic.

They're so lame. They can't produce an actual human being who remembers SERVING with him, even after offering a reward.

3. Agreed- this is really playing out in a bizarre manner
This strikes me as more fitting for a Monty Python skit than the actions of the Executive Branch...
Whatever happened to the "adults" who were supposed to be in charge?

9. This was of interest in the article
In a new development Wednesday, a retired Texas National Guard officer said he overheard a conversation in 1997 between then-Gov. Bush's chief of staff, Joe Allbaugh, and then-Adjutant Gen. Daniel James of the Texas Air National Guard in which he contends those two men spoke about getting rid of any military records that would ``embarrass the governor.''

Former Lt. Col. Bill Burkett told the AP that he saw documents from Bush's file discarded in a trash can a few days later at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. Burkett described them as performance and pay documents. He said the documents bore the header: ``Bush, George W. 1lt.'' - meaning first lieutenant.

Anyone hear of this elsewhere?

8. They must be getting desperate
You see, he WAS there. This proves it. He showed up to get his teeth fixed.

No other human being has come forward in all this time to say "I saw the motherfucker on station. Not one.

This here reads like a comedy sketch, like "Who's on first" or Month Python or something.

13. All they have to ask is
if he had dental work done, and his Doc says he was physically fit...WHY didn't he have his flight physical?
I still think there is some there there.

15. More questions from the AP story about the dental exam....

According to the White House, the dental exam shows Bush did report for duty in Alabama. The exam, however, was done after November 1972, when earlier reports have said Bush returned to Texas.

19. have to love the list of AP writers at the end of the story.....
they are working on this a LOT....and IMO, that's a GOOD sign...a few alert reporters could make an entire career out of this, if they find and report the FACTS.....they must know that too...these people are on the trail of a BIG story....

"Associated Press writers Allen G. Breed in Raleigh, N.C., Kelley Shannon in Austin, Texas, and Kendal Weaver in Montgomery, Ala., and Jay Reeves in Birmingham, Ala., contributed to this report."

17. Showing up for free dentist but not showing up for work.
Unbelievably weak. They are desperate. Why don't we try to get the records of some other NG pilots from the same period that actually did their duty. I'm sure it would be quite easy. I could have my complete Army records very easily.

27. So what did he do in July 73?
My dad, a WWII vet, stayed in the National Guard until 1970. His group met for a few hours once a week at first, then they changed their sessions to all day Saturday and Sunday one weekend a month.
He had to be there when the other members of his group were there because otherwise, they couldn't meet. There had to be some form of regularity and consistancy for any work to get done.

The frequency of Dubya's attendance in July of 1973 is also puzzling. What did Dubya do when he showed up several times a week? He wasnt't flying. Unless others were showing up at the same frequency, he couldn't meet with anyone. He wasn't reliable enough to assign him a task to do without supervision. Did he just sign-in on the roster and then go have a beer? He sure couldn't have been contributing much with the irregularity of his attendance.

23. Is dental report a replacement for MEDICAL records.
Are they supplying the dental report as a replacement for medical records? Do they think the American people are dumb enough to get the two confused?

Other silly questions:
Why would he go to a military dentist, did he think the dentist gave the required flight physical?
Why would he go to a military dentist and risk having the silver spoon removed from his mouth?
Why would he go to a military dentist, they don't do gold fillings?

Is John Erlichman working for the Bush White House? The way all of this is being handled is very Nixonian. All we need is a Deep Throat and a Woodward and Bernstein.

Why in the Hell doesn't the White House just release his ANG records that prove he served his time? Why in the Hell does it seem like I've answered my own question?
