Toronto Star: "NDP's Layton takes anti-missile drive to U.S."
Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 08:50 PM by Minstrel Boy
WASHINGTON — NDP Leader Jack Layton brought his opposition to the U.S. missile defence plan south today, saying he's forming alliances with American legislators worried about weapons in space.

"We have some allies here," said Layton, who met congressmen and academics. "If the very important symbolic statement were made by Canada that we are not going to be a part of this particular technological initiative, that would open the door to many more conversations with Americans who are concerned."

...

Layton told a group of academics that the program is just the first step toward a system requiring interceptors in space.

"It creates a market. This is not a market that we want created. We want a market for food, for people who don't have enough to eat. Let's create those kinds of economic activities."
