Diamonds are a SA mercenary's best friend

A new breed of South African soldier of fortune is currently operating in Africa's conflict zones and, in particular, is making a killing on the diamond fields of west Africa.

"Blood diamonds", a valuable commodity in the trade of weapons and drugs, have become a lucrative avenue for South African mercenaries to secure gainful "employment".

Their military experience and skills are actively sought by parties with vested interests in west African diamond fields and allegiance is sold to the highest bidder.

Despite laws prohibiting former South African security forces personnel being contracted as mercenaries, a loophole in the legislation allows them to be employed as "private security consultants".
