9/11 panel ??? says reports show `no smoking guns'
From Tribune news services
Published February 11, 2004
WASHINGTON -- The

chairman of the commission

investigating the Sept. 11 attacks said Tuesday there were "no smoking guns" in classified Oval Office intelligence reports to suggest that President Bush and his senior White House aides fumbled intelligence warning of the possibility of a terrorist strike before the attacks.

The comments from the

chairman of the panel

, former Gov. Thomas Kean of New Jersey, came on the same day that the White House relented in the face of a subpoena threat and agreed to allow all 10 members of the independent panel to review a summary of the intelligence reports. The daily briefings are prepared each morning by the Central Intelligence Agency for the Oval Office.

1. Good, if there are no smoking guns then...
They should have no problem releasing all of the information that was requested to all of the commission members.

2. what kind of stupid rhetoric is that?
a smoking gun, by *definition* is evidence that comes after the fact.

what is this "search for a smoking gun" bullshit about, anyway? who put that stupid term into the 9-11 lexicon? the "smoking gun" is better known as "the smoking ruins" of the world trade center. the question is whether, considering what we knew at the time, we should have been better prepared for such a possibility. whether those in charge failed us. you don't need to prove they were absolutely certain of the future event. they couldn't have been anyway. this whole conversation feels like a fucking farce...

this whole decade has seemed like a fucking farce.

3. the reality of it is this: there are smoking guns all over the place
there are so many inconsistencies, and when you throw little things like physics and metallurgy into the equation, well, it simply stops making any sense at all.

So now we see this commission following in the footsteps of the Warren Commission. Yet another blow to the notions of freedom and democracy.

:-(

4. they knew
and the commissioner knows it.
bushco was warned over and over again that a very bad event was going to happen -- what this guy doesn't take on is whether bushco should have said something.
and as far as the media goes -- they are bought and sold -- and that's just about all you can say about them.

5. Per NPR this am the 9-11 widows were outraged that the commission
has let bush* get away with giving them only a summary of the PDB (pres. daily briefings) and not the actual briefings themselves. I hope they get on the news channels and blast the commission for trying to save bush's* butt!!
