Steve Young corrects reports he is against Proposition 8
Source: KSL-TV, Salt Lake City

Hall of Famer Steve Young talked with KSL-TV about his family and the Proposition 8 vote in California today. He wants to correct a press release sent yesterday, which we reported, linking him to Magic Johnson and others voting no on Proposition 8.

Today he said, "I have not given anyone authority to use my name whatsoever in any political matter."

California's Proposition 8 is a proposed amendment that would ban same-sex marriage. Barbara Young, Steve's wife, is passionate on this issue. Her only sibling, Michael, is gay. A video on YouTube from a San Francisco television station shows the Young's home in Palo Alto with a Vote "No" on Prop 8 sign and anti-discrimination Halloween decorations in the yard.

... Steve's statement says, in part, "For Barb, who has a remarkable and enviable compassion for others, those political activities are far more public than mine. Those who know me know I chose long ago not to be publicly active in the political process. I do have strong opinions. I do vote and will vote on Tuesday. But those matters are private. What I will say is that Barb and I and our children love our church and our faith."

Here is what the San Francisco Chronicle said on Friday:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=14&entry_id=32216

While it's Barb Young's name that appears on the checks, she made it clear in a statement issued today through Equality California that the contributions are a family affair.

"We believe ALL families matter and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop. 8," she said.

Later, she clarified her remarks with this update: "To expand on my earlier email, I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement."

I think you're thinking of Kolob.

As if regular Christianity wasn't wacky enough.

3. How sad this country can be
when our 'heroes' have to hide even something so simple as their personal beliefs out of fear of a public backlash

5. I don't think it's fear of PUBLIC backlash
I think it was more a threat of excommunication from going against the church.

10. Doubt it...sounds like the church is supportive of his wife...
He just does not want his political views to interfere with him doing business with those who disagree with him. I know the feeling. When I am in a business situation, I do not bring up religion (or lack thereof) or politics since I would not want conflicting views to break a potential deal.

The Church runs that whole state, and they are definitely NOT supportive of her.

Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 11:03 PM by AsahinaKimi
Maybe he should just stay away from politics..and be a football hero.
I remember a few years back how so many 49ers claimed they would vote for Bush..it sort of
took the magic away from my team. Now, I don't want to know whose voting for McCain on that team, it will just make me :puke:

9. endorsements in general, and celebrity endorsements in particular
are completely irrelevant to my decision making process on any issue or candidate. I despise the whole celebrity obsession in this country. I wish they'd all just shut up, whether they be on the left or right.

20. Hillary isn't a celebrity
she's a political figure, there's a difference. But when you get right down to it, her endorsement or lack thereof means little to me either. That said, she at least has expertise in the field, unlike some random entertainer with a half baked opinion.

Of course this separation of his "private" beliefs will not stop him for running for office in the future.

Looks like the squad from Utah Central Control made a visit to the Youngs.

Oh and just for your "call" on that with a sports theme this one is for you Steve...
