Pinellas delays vote on rebel flag

After recent conflicts over student displays of the Confederate flag in Tampa Bay area schools, Tuesday's Pinellas County School Board discussion on whether to ban the flag district-wide was relatively peaceful.

Reporters and television cameras nearly outnumbered the small group who showed up Tuesday morning to tell the School Board what they think about the issue.

"People are sleepwalking if they think that it's just a few African-Americans that have a problem with the Confederate flag," said Bilal Habeeb-ullah, founder of the African American Leadership Council of Clearwater.

Not so, said Sons of Confederate Veterans member Charles Pedrick. He said the board should ban all symbols in schools - including Christian crosses and Jewish Stars of David - or not ban anything at all.

1. Sons of C V has a bogus issue
the 'Confederate flag' in question is the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was never officially adopted as the Confederate banner. The real Confederate Flag had a blue canton with stars and three bars (as opposed to stripes) of red, white, and red. The canton changed over time, once becoming the battle flag-but the battle flag itself was never official. There were other battle flags that were flown as well, but their design have more or less been lost to history. The only reason the battle flag in question has remained in the public eye is its use by the KKK.

So sons of Confederate veterans can show their heritage the proper way-by displaying the Stars and Bars. This daughter of the Grand Army of the Republic will have no problem if they do-but has a ton of problems if they support showing the KKK banner.

2. WTF happened to my hometown?? Jeb Bush cohorts maybe?
Uggh. When I first saw "Jeb" bumperstickers there..uggh. Now this.

For me, much of Florida was a sweet sanddune with plenty of crackers and clear-water springs and breezes that usually seemed to wash the bad stuff away.
