Teenagers Beat (9 year old Tajik) Girl to Death in Russia

A group of drunken teenagers beat and stabbed a 9-year-old Tajik girl to death and severely wounded her father and 11-year-old cousin in St. Petersburg, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The attackers about 10 to 12 youths armed with knives, brass knuckles, chains and bats assaulted the three Central Asians in a courtyard in the city center Monday night, said Yelena Ordynskaya, spokeswoman for the city's prosecution office.

The girl received 11 knife wounds and died on the spot," she said. Police identified the girl as Khursheda Sultanova. Her 34-year-old father, Yusuf Sultanov, and her and 11-year-old cousin were hospitalized but later released.

Many Tajiks and nations of other impoverished former Soviet republics come to Russia in hopes of making a living, and are often targeted in such attacks.

there has long been prejudice against Central Asians on the part of Russians. This fellow said that the slang term for a Central Asian was "chornaya zhopa," or "black ass."

Under Communism, everyone was required to pretend to get along, but with that restraint gone, the old prejudices have free reign.

people always turn against "others," don't you think? I think there's also a tipping point when people feel their country has been invaded by immigrants.
I think that's what we're seeing with the banning of religious wear in French schools, the French feeling overwhelmed by the huge Muslim, largely African, influx into western Europe. My sense, and fear, is that we'll see it in this country when the Hispanic population gets large enough. I don't know how you get any population to agree to share their turf with large numbers of "others" and remain peaceful and tolerant. Any ideas?
