Supremacist plot (against Obama) wasn't fully formed, authorities say
Source: Associated Press

BELLS, Tenn. -- Two white supremacists charged with plotting to behead blacks across the country and assassinate Barack Obama while wearing white top hats and tuxes were likely too disorganized to carry out the plot, authorities said, and their planning was riddled with blunders.

Paul Schlesselman, 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark., and Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells are accused of dreaming up the plan. While authorities say they had guns capable of creating carnage, documents show they never got close to getting off the ground.

Among the blunders: They drew attention to themselves by etching swastikas on a car with sidewalk chalk, only knew each other for a month, couldn't even pull off a house robbery and a friend ratted them out to authorities.

"Certainly these men have some frightening weapons and some very frightening plans," said Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who studies the white supremacy movement. "But with the part about wearing top hats ... it gets a bit hard to take them seriously."

17. Can we count on your support for the death penalty
when it is determined who killed the members of Jennifer Hudson's family, as well?

These are a couple of idiots, the likes of which we're extremely likely to see repeated over the next four, hopefully eight years. An Obama Presidency will bring out the very worst of them like we haven't seen since the days of George Wallace and Lester Maddox.

"Hey Jethro!-- whadda think a' that Obama Hussein fella?"

"Shee-it, Bubba. They somethin' about that boy...."

"He black, Jethro! He black!"

"I knew it."

"What we gonna do? Shee-it! Pass me that paper sack, wouldja?"

(Giggles) "Let's shoot 'im, Bubba! We'll even git on the Bill O'Really show! Let's kill 'im!"

"Aheh aheh, yeah Jethro-- we'll like dress in white hats and tuxes an' shit-- and! whoa! --we'll shoot up the high school too!"

"YEAH BABIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!"

"Pass me that sack, wouldja? We go'in huntin' tomorrow?"

"Nuthin' ain't in season. Yeah, I guess we are! Pass that sack."

Paul and Daniel's excellent adventure.

This is just silly. Dangerous "white supremacists?" More like a couple of dumb kids.

I feel like I woke up on a different planet, probably on 12 September, 2001. Or maybe on 20 January, 2000.

16. Hate to break it to you, but almost all of the 'white supremacists' movements in this
country are made up of really 'dumb' kids. However, they have murdered dozens.

6. Perhaps the Business Plot of 2009 will be fully formed and cleverly organized, though.
(an allusion to the Business Plot of 1934)

Actually things are a little different this time around. In the early '30s it was the business community that had the brutal attitude needed to plot a coup against a liberal president. This time, any serious attempt will probably come from the grassroots of the radical right.

9. Any excuse to not call them terrorist
Of course if they were of a different color or different religion then we all know they would already be off to Gitmo.

11. They're not terrorists. They're fantasists.
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 06:30 AM by asthmaticeog
They could well be PRE-terroristic, of course -- they're fantasizing about becoming glorious race warrior/assassins, ferfuxsakes -- and they're certainly criminally inclined, so it's very, very good that they're nabbed now, but left wing abuse of the word "terrorism" is as dumb, deceptive and destructive as right wing abuse of it.

14. Anyone who attempts to dismiss the pure evil of this plan has my overwhelming contempt.
"Glorious race warrior/assassins?"

That doesn't work.

23. I didn't say it wasn't evil. It was evil. It's just that it would never happen.
A drive-by shooting, in white tuxes and top hats, killing exactly 88 people? This was pure fantasy, no different than those guys in Miami with a "terror plot" that turned out to be - say it with me - PURE FANTASY. Remember how ridiculous and foolish Homeland Security looked for making such a big deal of those guys?

Are there real threats to America? Certainly. Are there real threats to Senator Obama? I have no doubt. But for how plausible it seems that these stupid skinhead kids' "plans" could ever possibly be carried out? They may as well have been threatening to kill the Senator by playing air guitar.

21. I agree that "terrorist" is thrown around WAY too much
and so has become a cliched, buzz word, which is unfortunate, but we're not talking about a political pundit or rival, we're talking about white supremacists with destructive intentions. They really are terrorists, by definition.

24. I'll grant that shooting out that church window may have been intended to terrorize.
Or, they might just be stupid vandals.

There was nothing even slightly realistic about their "plan," is all I'm saying, and calling them terrorists trivializes the real thing just as surely as the overbroad definitions of terror in some of our dumber recent laws do.

13. You've got a point. The FBI sent in an informant who just happened to ALSO be the one who brought UP
the idea, and who also offered them a great deal of money, cars, clothing, new boots, etc., etc., etc. to play their part in it.

Bush's prosecutors tried them once, didn't get the verdict they wanted, hung jury, and then tried them AGAIN, and STILL didn't get the verdict they wanted, and left with the threat hanging in the air that they would be out to do it again.

In the meantime, people in South Florida, judging them by the remarks they posted in the Miami Herald, couldn't have had LESS respect for the government's entrapment of these needy, disadvantaged men.

If they don't treat these two men, who wanted to murder and decapitate black students, in addition to murdering the President, to a serious trial, we'll know some sick, sick people are running things, for sure.
