McCain has terse response on Palin shopping spree
Source: AP

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Presidential candidate John McCain isn't happy about having to explain why the Republican Party has had to buy running mate Sarah Palin $150,000 in clothes, hair styling and accessories.

McCain was asked several questions on Thursday about the shopping spree — and he answered each one more or less the same way: Palin needed clothes and they'll be donated to charity.

McCain offered no further comment, except to say that the Republican National Committee doesn't buy his clothes.

News of the purchases, largely from upscale Saks Fifth Avenue and Nieman Marcus, contrasts with the image Palin has crafted as a typical hockey mom.

and Bristol's, and Willow's and Todd's new clothes away from them???

How the hell are they going to donate the hair and make up expenses to charity?

McCain, you are a fucking liar. But, we all knew that already.

After they've been thoroughly fumed, of course. They will be kind of historic.

34. possibly. or auction them off. thrift stores aren't only about cheap clothes for the poor...
they are fundraising locations. the charities generally don't care WHO shops/buys clothes/items at a thrift store, poor or wealthy- the stores are there to make money for the charities.

from Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue??? I guess it *is* truth in advertising, though; McCain-Palin would be serving the uber wealthy elite, not any of the rest of us, so naturally she would want to look like any of her constituents.

How about ...

* potential new homeowner education?

I'm sure many other DUers could do a more thorough job of this kind of list that would really hit home.

14. So...after the election what is Palin going to do? Walk around nude?
Go back to wearing her old clothes, which must be just awful if she didn't have any presentable enough for public. I mean, doesn't the Governor of Alask have to dress nicely to go to work? Does she wear jeans and a sweatshirt to work?

Sounds to me like the $150,000 was an even bigger waste of money (or rip off of donor money) if they're going to just donate the clothes after the election.

This just doesn't add up. It stinks like raw fish left laying out on the counter for a week.

20. Senator McCain, do you mean to tell us that after you win and she
becomes VP, those clothes (many of which have only been worn once or twice) are gonna be given away??? Are we, the taxpayers, going to have to fork out more money to replace them so she doesn't have to look like a hockey mom from Wasilla as she goes about her VP duties???????? Why wouldn't she keep them and USE THEM???

I know the answer, of course. McCain knows there is ZERO chance of his winning.

30. Palin needed clothes.
If so, she's probably the only professional woman in America who pulls down 125k who needs clothes. What was she doing before, going naked? In Alaska?

This speaks volumes about the Republicans, particularly the judgment of the folks running McCain's campaign. They need to gussy up Palin so that she could properly play the role of the trophy running mate, so what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most regular folks, plumbers or hockey moms, might buy clothes at Target, JC Penney, Sears or Wal-Mart, or maybe Kohl's, Macy's or Talbots or someplace similar. But the McCain campaign? Their first impulse was to go straight to Nieman Marcus and Saks.

She's not caribou Barbie. She's Marie Antoinette Barbie.

Pricey new duds aren't helping Palin in polls
