In New McCain Robocall, Rudy Giuliani Suggests Obama Opposes Jailing Murderers And Rapists
Source: TPM

It was perhaps predictable that the task of recording the worst of McCain's robo-slime -- the worst so far, at least -- would fall to Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani has recorded a new McCain robocall in which he suggests, in effect, that Barack Obama doesn't think sex offenders, drug dealers and murderers should have to go to jail, according to Jennifer Henderson, a stay-at-home mom in Maine who tells us she received the call.

Readers in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ohio, and Colorado also report receiving the same call....

Script:

"Hi, this is Rudy Giuliani, and I'm calling for John McCain and the Republican National Committee because you need to know that Barack Obama opposes mandatory prison sentences for sex offenders, drug dealers, and murderers.

It's true, I read Obama's words myself. And recently, Congressional liberals introduced a bill to eliminate mandatory prison sentences for violent criminals -- trying to give liberal judges the power to decide whether criminals are sent to jail or set free. With priorities like these, we just can't trust the inexperience and judgment of Barack Obama and his liberal allies. This call was paid for by the Republican National Committee and McCain-Palin 2008 at 866 558 5591."

Note that Rudy claims Obama "opposes mandatory prison sentences" for rapists and murders. Rudy is actually referring to Obama's opposition to specific mandatory minimum sentences. By dropping the word "minimum," he's insinuating that Obama opposes mandatory prison sentences in general.

This just might be the sleaziest exercise in robo-slime yet....

9. Talk about lipstick on a pig.
"For the record, I have never put lipstick on a pig. Or a pitbull. Or myself - Rudy Giuliani, that's one for you." - Barack Obama.

5. I oppose mandatory sentences for a lot of reasons
They allow for no differentiation by the judges when there are mitigating circumstances.

A father who hunts down and kills a man who rapes his wife or child should not get the same sentence as someone who abducts, rapes and kills another person. Both are first degree murder, though.

In drug cases-we had a case where a grandmother who picked up her drug-dealing grandson at the airport got life for delivery of drugs. She didn't even know he was carrying them, but that's the way the mandatory sentencing law was written.

10. Scary.
Re: that "drug transporting" grandmother. Stuff like that is why I'll probably never travel to the U.S. I'm terrified of the American justice system. It isn't just because of the harsh penalties for minor offenses or innocent bystanders like the grandmother. Suspects and defendants are guilty until proven innocent. Police, prosecutors and judges are more concerned with politics than justice. Many innocent people are sent to death row. Incarcerated psychiatric patients are denied medication and treatment. If you're anywhere near the crime scene when a friend or relative commits murder, you get convicted of the murder too, whether you're really an accessory or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Marginalized people are especially vulnerable to being railroaded.

A few months ago, I saw an item on the TV news about a bi-polar guy who went "off his meds" and got into a very bad barroom fight. Now he's doing 20-to-life without meds or treatment. This scares the crap out of me because I've been on anti-depressants for most of my adult life. I also take medication for sleeping. If I'm "off my meds", I don't sleep. On top of that, the label "psychiatric patient" would mean I'd have almost no courtroom cred.

I'm just scared of doing a long stretch in prison for being in the same car with some guy who has a joint in his pocket.

20. The mandatory drug lifer law is limited to a certain weight of cocaine and heroin
Not of marijuana.

Proposal 1 on the ballot this fall is a medical marijuana proposal. It pretty much makes it legal for anyone with any kind of chronic condition.
