Al-Qaida-linked Web site backs McCain as president

Oct 21, 11:41 PM (ET)
By PAMELA HESS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush." SITE Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Md., monitors the Web site and translated the message.

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

- Well, between the AIP and Al-Qaida, it would appear that the Republicans have wrapped the main secessionist and terrorist groups endorsements....

1. Yep. And should AQ commit some despicable act
before we all vote, I am confident Barack and Joe will have a most appropriate response ready.

I'll never understand why John Kerry didn't ask, "Why the hell is OBL still alive and free to send tapes hoping you'll vote for Bush in the election?"

Barack has proven he is ready for any eventuality.

12. At least they are up front about it.
Instead of making those ubiquitous Bin Laden videos and pretending to support a Democratic candidate.

Well not really so up front, this was on a web site that was protected and it had to be translated.

I couldn't believe the idiots around me who fell for the Bin Laden tapes and honestly believed Bin Laden wanted Kerry to be the next president. Some people are just begging to be conned out of everything they own.

21. Actually...
...I think they do realize this. And they know that it won't be some misdirected effort with no clear goal in mind. And damn more likely to be effective. Even al-Qaida has to know intelligence when they see it. Rather than the blustering idiots with their saber-rattling that we've witnessed these past 8 years.

- So it's in their interest that McCain get elected, for their own survival....

51. But Obama would use intelligence, not an army to wage war on whatever
nation a few of them are sitting in. More translators, more CIA, THAT'S what wins a war against terrorists-not armies and billions for war profiteers. But then again, Bush never went after terrorists, he went after oil and riches.

35. I suspect they thought the interview might be a net loss.
Because Rick Sanchez would show video of a whole lot of hate and xenophobia the McCain/Palin rallies. The hate would offend the rational people and the fact that hate was being criticized would offend the base. Either way McCain loses.

38. And not forgetting that...
...their "base" might look askance at the fact that their "HERO" and their God-chosen "Lady-Leader" have honest-to-god REAL LIVE MUSLIMS their camp.

- And if that happened, Sarah Palin as their pick becomes not just the tragedy that it is, but a total wash.

48. This is truly weird!!!
If Al Qaida really wanted McCain to win, I would think they would come out saying they support Obama, hoping for a significant backlash against such a statement.

Or maybe such subtle logic is beyond them.

But nothing in the whole Bin Laden / Al-Qaida story makes much sense to me.

50. Assuming that the posters thought....
...that their communications were secure, then I can see them openly discussing McCain's election as being to the benefit of keeping their reign of terror going. The site indicates that they obtained these comments from what is supposed to be a secure site.

- And McCain's camp so far has had no comment on it. Not even a denial as to its authenticity. That's even stranger....
