Michael Vick to plead on Va. dogfighting charges
Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick plans to enter a guilty plea next week on the state dogfighting charges he faces in Virginia, according to his attorneys Lawrence H. Woodward and Billy Martin.

Woodward and Martin filed a motion with the Surry County Circuit Court on Oct. 17, “asking the Court to allow Mr. Vick, pursuant to the Virginia Rules, to enter a plea of guilty to the pending state charges via videoconference,” Martin said in a statement released to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. “Together with his motion, Mr. Vick filed a waiver in which he forgoes his right to personally appear at the plea hearing and agrees to be bound by the decision of the court.”

The hearing has been schedule for 11 a.m, Thursday, Oct. 30. The Virginia indictment charges Vick with one count of torturing and killing dogs and one count of promoting dogfighting. Each carries a maximum five-year prison term.

Vick is scheduled to be released from federal prison on July 20, 2009.

3. Nothing to do with the Falcons, or football for that matter.

11. Except for the first three words of the article you linked, and the fact that
the article comes from the AJC sports page, and that the only reason this got national attention was Vick's football stature. Beyond that, you're right - nothing to do with football or the Falcons...

12. Sorry I didn't use the Bloomberg or AP piece.
I'll do better next time. And last I checked, the felon in question is no longer working for the NFL or the Falcons, nor will he ever again. Kind of like saying OJ's recent problems have something to do with football, outside of the fact that it was memorabilia.

Thanks for your concern.

4. Hope the judge does the right thing and give Vick the max.
If he does get out next summer, Goodell needs to do the right thing and tell Vick to shove off, go play in the CFL, if they'll have him.

7. To get parole
I was reading an article that said under Federal Law you cannot get parole from federal incarciration if you have outstanding charges.

By pleading guilty, the case in Virginia will have been resolved and he'll be eligible to make parole.

8. He's going to have more time on the state charges though.
This doesn't seem to be a plea in exchange for lesser charges situation, so he'll have state time when he's released from club fed.

9. According to the article in his plea he'll get probation for the VA charges
Key points from the article:

1. Under federal rules, Vick is ineligible to be released to a Residential Re-entry Center in the federal system until any pending charges against him are resolved.

2. The plea deal, if approved, also would satisfy the county's need to hold him accountable for the grisly crimes he bankrolled and participated in at a rural house he owned there.

3. Vick will have three years of federal probation upon his release from prison, and the deal offered by Poindexter would tack on an unspecified jail sentence, which would be suspended, and an additional year of probation in the county, he said.

10. No state time? That's pretty damn shitty.
Obviously conviction wouldn't be a problem- the feds already got one. I was hoping they'd tack on more time, even if they opted not to go to trial. But a no-time plea in a slam dunk case like this seems kinda stupid and lazy on the state's part.

13. They haven't taken any deal yet.
And besides, the fucker is ruined. It's almost better than jail time. Wait, no it isn't because it could be both.

14. Not the States doing, Poindexter did not even want to pursue the case
Fed intervention forced his hand.

15. After seeing the pilot for Dog Town... I can honestly say
I hope they pull every single one of Vick's teeth out of his mouth before they release him. That's what he did to one of his dogs (so that they could breed her).

Another was terrified of humans. TERRIFIED.

There are few people that I will admit to hating, Vick is one of them.
