AP INVESTIGATION: Palin children traveled on state
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 05:27 PM by RedEarth
Source: AP

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business.

The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.

In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

........

In October 2007, Palin brought daughter Bristol along on a trip to New York for a women's leadership conference. Plane tickets from Anchorage to La Guardia Airport for $1,385.11 were billed to the state, records show, and mother and daughter shared a room for four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House hotel, which overlooks Central Park.

Welcome to the People's Republic of Alaska, where every resident this year will get a $3,200 payout, thanks in no small measure to the efforts of Sarah Palin, the state's Republican governor. That's $22,400 for a family of seven, like Palin's. Since 1982, the Alaska Permanent Fund, which invests oil revenues from state lands, has paid out a dividend on invested oil loot to everyone who has been in the state for a year. But Palin upped the ante by joining with Democrats and some recalcitrant Republican state legislators to share in oil company windfall profits, further fattening state tax revenue and permitting an additional payout in tax funds to residents.

time the rural areas were telling how horrendous it was to stay warm and when the rural areas were exiting from the villages into the cities, which is a huge problem especially at the start of the cold season.

The Permanent fund is a thing that was set up nearly three decades ago to share the investment revenue of the fund with the people of the state. ANY GODDAMNED STATE could do that if they gave a damn but they didn't. We did. We have the permanent fund as a hedge against the future. SARAH Palin and every other governor has ZIP influence over it. Her heating add on was a political ploy, pure and simple.

81. But the permanent fund is socialism, isn't it?
It's public ownership of public lands and public sharing of the wealth generated by that public ownership.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Just think if we all got to share in all the wealth generated by corporations feeding off our public lands: off shore oil, logging in national forests, strip mining, even cattle grazing on BLM land.

but then, there are those of us who have no problem with socialism, and one of us is

Tansy Gold

67. Congratulations, you have successfully mastered republican logic,
Herr Doktor Merkwürdigliebe. You can be accused of attacking anything you mention in your criticism of one of them. Thus, if you criticize Palin, about something she did with her family, you are attacking her family. You are also attacking the airline industry, and the hotel she stayed at. And the taxpayers of Alaska, since they paid for the trips. How dare you badmouth the Alaskan taxpayers! If you criticize George Bush regarding the conduct of a war, say in some oil-producing desert country, then you are attacking the troops. Or America. Where is your patriotism?

Oh, yes, and "criticism" is defined as "telling the truth."

7. AP INVESTIGATION: Palin children traveled on state
Source: The Associated Press

Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business.

The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.

... As governor, Palin justified having the state pay for the travel of her daughters _ Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7 _ by noting on travel forms that the girls had been invited to attend or participate in events on the governor's schedule. ...

Why should the state of Alaska have to pay for this? If she wants to bring her kids along, fine, but it's her responsibility to pay for them.

She claims to be a fiscal conservative but she sure as hell isn't fiscally conservative with public money when it's being spent on behalf of her family. Alaska ought to open an investigation into this.

You must be talking about where Palin finds out that the media has requested her expense reports, so she goes and retroactively changes them to be "more clear" (quotes mine) that her kids were accompanying her on official business.

"Tony Knowles, a Democratic former governor of Alaska who lost to Palin in a 2006 bid to reclaim the job, said he never charged the state for his three children's commercial flights or claimed their travel as official state business. Knowles, who was governor from 1994 to 2002, is the only other recent Alaska governor who had school-age children while in office."

76. Constitution says: Prez or Vice-Prez must be at least 35 and a natural born citizen.
And have fourteen years of residence in America. That's it. Convicted felons are not excluded. Mass murderers not excluded. Traitors and foreign spies not excluded. (So long as they are natural born foreign spies.) A person in a coma can be president or vice president. A raving lunatic can be . . .

Well, this could go on.

A corporation, though ruled legally a person, would not be considered "a natural born citizen" and therefore could not serve as President nor Vice President. Whew! I know some of you were worried about that one. (Imagine what a President Exxon Mobil might do! Okay, maybe not much different from a President Bush.)

As a taxpayer, and based on her past record of billing the state of AK for frivolties for her kids, I don't approve of MY tax dollars spent to raise her brood for her.

Palin's 'Anti American' beliefs have not impressed me enough for that approval.
She should go home & live like the rest of America.

A non-issue, compared to the real and substantive issues voters have with the McCain/Palin ticket.

So... she wanted to be with her kids. I for one can give her that much. What I take issue with is her ignorance, and her impenetrable fundamentalist belief system, and her proven vindictive nature (troopergate) that fits Bush/Cheney like a glove, and doesn't represent change.

126. Sorry for being late to reply. I see your point.
I wonder, though, whether it's about time that we reconsider needs in a global village, where indeed so many essential jobs require extended travel. These jobs are essential, so their worth should be given recompense accordingly, and how better to do this than in payment that recognizes the worth of the worker, so helps the worker build a healthy family? I'm not against such "perks", when they correspond with the job requirement, when within reason.

Of course, I see the opposing point: these "perks" should be negotiated and contracted to, they shouldn't just be taken by some politicians. And it's especially irksome when some politician who just "takes" such perks happens to also be the self-same closed minded, meanspirited type who makes sure that rape victims pay up front for the rape kits required for evidence. To prove her bona fides as a fiscal conservative "cost cutter", no less. In fact, I find that a bit creepy.

Oldest two kids high school drop outs along with future husband of pregnant daughter just dropped out. Doesn't seem to set a very high standard for education in this family, and shamefully, apparently both of her parents are/were teachers?

106. I ran across the following online earlier
Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 01:46 AM by chatnoir
And didn't know what to make of it. Makes it sounds like there are a boatload of skeletons more in this political grifter's closet.

All of the following material is taken from a confidential DoJ report sitting on my desk as I write.

The Republican’s unvetted choice was born Sarah Louise Heath on February 11, 1964 at Sandpoint, Idaho. Her father, Charles Heath was a science teacher and her mother, Sally Sheeran Heath was listed as a housewife. Sarah attended a number of schools and finally received a BA in journalism from the University of Idaho. Her current husband, Todd, is a Native American Yup'ik Eskimo and works for BP at one of their Alaskan oil fields and does part-time work as a fisherman.

They have five children. Their eldest son, Track, 19, is in the U.S. army and their three daughters, Bristol, 18, Willow, 14 and Piper, 7. In 2008 (April 18, 2008), a son, Trig was born. This child suffers from Mongoloidism. Their second unmarried daughter Willow, is now pregnant.

The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about 40 miles north of Anchorage.

Aside from a number of thoroughly unpleasant episodes concerning family members, overcharging the state, heavy involvement with corrupt local politicians, attempts to foster her personal religious beliefs (Palin is a very active and aggressive Evangelical) there is the question of family matters she has attempted to conceal to advance her political career. Governor Palin “proudly displays” an Israeli flag in her gubernatorial office and for a very good reason.

Her maternal grandfather, Schmuel Sheigam, was a Lithuanian Jew, born in 1912 in Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, 91.2 miles west of Vilnius. The Sheigam family immigrated to America, via Hamburg, Germany in 1915 because of WWI.

At Ellis Island Immigration Centre, the name was entered as Sheeran, a standard practice of the time when immigration officers were unable to understand the pronunciation of non-English speaking immigrants. Sheeran is a common Irish name but members of the Sheigam family are buried in the Jewish cemetery at Budezeriai near Vilkaviskis:in Lithuania

Further information on Governor Palin’s ancestors can easily be found in the vital records in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius. The Archives holds birth, marriage, divorce, and death records for the Lithuanian Jewish community from 1851 until 1915 when the Jews were required to leave the country because of World War I. They are in 18th Century Cyrillic script and Yiddish Many of these records include the mother's maiden name and town of registration.
