Al Qaeda said to be promoting civil war in Iraq
US officials said yesterday they would press ahead with transferring power to an Iraqi government by July, despite evidence that Al Qaeda might be trying to ignite an all-out civil war in the country within the next few months.

"There is clearly a plan on the part of outsiders to come in and create sectarian violence, to try to expose fissures in this society," Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of operations for the coalition forces, said. At a news conference in Baghdad yesterday, he described a 17-page memorandum that US officials believe was written by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a key Al Qaeda operative in Iraq.

Who comes up with this stuff? Now, the magical morphing Al Qaeda has operatives who write 17-page strategy memoranda? Memoranda that happen to be discovered in "Al Qaeda safe houses in Baghdad" (??), just before they are carried out of Iraq by "Al Qaeda couriers" (??)...

1. Give the Bush administration a break
The administration always maintained there was an Iraqi-Al Qaeda connection and it took an invasion to prove their claims.

Of course, we have to ignore the probability that the invasion opened up Iraq to Al Qaeda. But what the heck. We've ignored a lot when it comes to the invasion. We can ignore one more thing. Once this administration develop a theory they don't back down - who cares about small matters like logic and fact?

<sarcasm off>

Logic demands that we seriously consider that the invasion of Iraq played right into the hands of Al Qaeda.

3. Get the public prepared for the civil war in Iraq
Looks like they accepted that civil war in Iraq will probably happen.

The propaganda machine already starts spinning. It's not our fault - it's those turrrrsts again!

4. Doesn't this put the neocon cabal between a stone and a corner?

I mean, they were warned that a war would result in escalation of terrorism and they ignored those warnings swearing up and down that this move would make us and everybody else more safe. So, they lose on that page. Then, they assert that in a show of good faith they are turning over authority in June (but, of course, are not planning on pulling out) which they are being warned will create an environment for civil uprising.

In my view, they are screwed!!! That's what they get for being so damned arrogant about their capacity to "build" a nation and "spread" democracy (not that I actually believe any of that any longer). Their PNAC agenda is creating chaos. Let's throw their butts in the middle of their own chaotic agenda!!!

Finally, I note that I am finding this Al Qaeda stuff increasingly suspect. The timing of the magical appearances of tapes and papers are uncanny in a number of different ways.

<edit - spelling>

5. Another deception
Most likely it is but even if it wasn't, the Iraqis are headed for civil war, if it is not in progress already. The only thing that may stop it is the US and allies forces and that may not deter it.

It is now doubtful that the US will allow the free elections to occur and will keep the Occupation in place from many more months after the June deadline. This will have a negative on the Neo Fascists and may even stop them from maintianing power in Amerika.

6. Just wondering...
Did anyone in this administration even think of the possibility of this happening?

was there nothing learned from the 15 year Lebanese Civil War, for starters?
