Bush predicts growth in jobs
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration predicted Monday that the U.S. economy will create 2.6 million jobs this year, despite sluggish growth so far.

The upbeat forecast came in the annual "Economic Report of the President," presented to Congress on Monday. It predicted 4% growth in the economy overall.

President Bush said in an attached statement, "As 2004 begins, America's economy is strong and getting stronger."

He's been predicting this for three years now. I'm not exactly holding my breath, are you?

1. 2.6 Million?!? That's pretty optimistic.
What's he going to do? Make them all "join" the military? Maybe he's confusing reconsituting the draft with job growth.

21. He has created that many already ...
overseas.

So AWOL (if everything goes as planned), will bearly recover all of the jobs lost on his watch, and claim that to be victory. I see it as proof that this little experiment is an utter failure.

Cheers

5. Bush math
5500 jobs per day
167000 jobs per month

Last report was 120,000 jobs added which will apparently be adjusted downward next report, so he is already 50,000 jobs in the hole.

Add the the projected offshoring of more manufacturing, high tech, finance, legal, and call center work, along with the failure of companies that are suppliers or in competition to those that are offshoring the real numbers of new jobs needed are more like

6850 jobs per day
208,000 jobs per month

What no one can articulate is where these new jobs will come from. The reason that cannot articulate this is because job growth is a fantasy.

11. Yes,...exactly WHERE will these jobs come from?
The only "clue" I've heard is an expectation that small businesses will produce these jobs. However, in the present climate with huge corporations essentially slaughtering small businesses, an entrepreneur has about a one in a hundred shot of succeeding. Actually, it's been that way for some time now.

8. The democrats need to trot out all the previous Bushshit projections
on job creation. This is an excellent opportunity to hammer home the points that not only has Bush been bad for job creation but he also constantly changes his story and lies, lies, lies.

January 7, 2003:
According to a projection by the Council of Economic Advisers, the President’s plan will help the economy to create 1.4 million new jobs by the end of 2004.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/01/20030107.html

February 4, 2003:
Stronger GDP growth would lead to an estimated 510,000 new jobs expected to be
created as a result of the proposal over the course of 2003. Another 891,000 new jobs would be created in 2004. On average, the level of employment in 2003 would be 192,000 higher than without the proposal and 900,000 higher in 2004 than in 2003.
http://www.jobwatch.org/creating/bkg/cea_on_bush_tax_cuts_20030204_macro_effects.pdf

A summary:
The president specifically promised that the tax bill would generate an additional 510,000 jobs by the end of 2003, growth above and beyond the jobs that an economy in recovery would naturally generate. In fact, the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) projected that, with no change in policy, the resilient U.S. economy would generate a baseline of 4.1 million jobs by the end of 2004, even without the tax cut. (That baseline 3% gain in jobs was modest compared to earlier recovery periods without tax cuts: job growth was 4% over a comparable period of time following the early 1990s recession.) The CEA explained that, on top of that baseline job growth, the tax bill would add 510,000 jobs by the end of 2003 and a total of 1.4 million more jobs by the end of 2004. All told, the Bush Administration projected growth of 5.5 million jobs by the end of 2004 if its tax cuts were adopted, or an average growth rate of 306,000 jobs a month from July 2003 to December 2004.

17. Yes, indeedy. Iraq and Afghanistan, for example.
Lookit the letter that arrived with my USAJOBS Job Alert on Monday:

Dear USAJOBS User:
I am pleased to announce a wonderful new recruitment collaboration between the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Department of Defense (DOD). It is my hope this team effort will benefit those who wish to serve their country. Since you have previously indicated a desire for updates on Federal opportunities, I wanted to make you aware of this important initiative.

Established last year, SOFIA (Support Our Friends in Iraq and Afghanistan) is the DOD website designed to hire exceptional temporary Federal employees to work for the Coalition Provisional Authority to assist in rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan. There is a tremendous need for skilled workers to assist in building these emerging democracies.

The USAJOBS and DOD SOFIA website collaboration is designed to leverage the recruiting powers of both websites to fill critical vacancies in the two developing nations, and is easy to get to through a prominent SOFIA link on the USAJOBS website.

Job skills sought are numerous and run the gamut from civil engineering, banking, and agriculture, to education, communications, and security. Selected individuals will be hired by the DOD through the U.S. Army for a twelve-month period with the option to extend. Interested applicants do not have to have prior or current Federal employee experience.

Because the pool of applicants and job seekers continues to swell at USAJOBS, this new alliance is a tremendous resource for promoting critical Federal hiring needs. I hope you will take a moment and review the jobs available overseas and consider serving your country while helping the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan with efforts to rebuild their nations.

Sincerely,

Kay Coles James Director

15. Question...
Does anyone know when the last time an average of 260,000 jobs per month were created over a ten month period?

I don't, but I'd bet it was under a Democrat. I'd even bet that the last 5 times it happened (if it happened that many) were under Dems.

20. Check out the blogs by Brad DeLong and Angry Bear
They have been pouncing on these ridiculously rosy projections for a few days now. And note, that even if this did happen (which it won't), there would *still* be a net job loss for Bush's presidency, the first since Hoover.
