McCain linked to group in Iran-Contra affair
Source: AP

WASHINGTON -- Republican Sen. John McCain served on the advisory board to the U.S. chapter of an international group linked to ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America in the 1980s.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom also aided rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua. That landed the group in the middle of the Iran-Contra affair and in legal trouble with the Internal Revenue Service, which revoked the charitable organization's tax exemption.

The council created by retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub was the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League, an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. After setting up the U.S. council, Singlaub served as the international league's chairman.

McCain's tie to Singlaub's council is undergoing renewed scrutiny after his presidential campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to William Ayers, a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago. Over the weekend, Democratic operative Paul Begala said on ABC's "This Week" that this "guilt by association" tactic could backfire on the McCain campaign by renewing discussion of McCain's service on the board of the U.S. Council for World Freedom, "an ultraconservative right-wing group."

In two interviews with The Associated Press in August and September, Singlaub said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain launched his political career. McCain was elected to the House in 1982.

It's better than the year it took them to notice Amy Goodman's story that the NSA routinely listened-in on American phone sex.

8. "McLiar"
fits him like a tight glove! I also think of him as "McChameleon" and "McFlip-of-the-coin" Nothing would surprise me with him, except that he was a decent, honest person who gave a damn about our country.

Btw, he probably launched his bloody career in a terrorists' living room. So I've heard.

6. U.S.CfWF is guilty of undermining The Constitution. Congress had denied appropriations to support
operations with and for the Contras; Singlaub et al decided that the will of the People doesn't mean anything.

The Nazi connection explains a great deal, including similarities with the aims and motivations of The Chicago Boys throughout South America, aided and abetted by connections to U.S. financiers, that lead to the deaths of 10s of thousands of People.

John McCain became uncomfortable with the U.S. Council for World Freedom group and got out in 1984 but it shows that two can play this game of loose associations to terrorists.

"Both the US Council for World Freedom and World Anti-Communist League helped nurture the U.S. government relationship with militant Islamic fundamentalists fighting the Soviet Union and its allies in Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world. This played an important role in the cascading series of unintended consequences that resulted in the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the creation and rise of the al Qaeda terrorist network and its imitators around the world."

19. It's a Crying Shame
The other day there was a truck driver that came on the C.B.
And stated He was a Vet. And that John Mc Cain Should be our next president because Mc Cain supported our Troops.
Then another truck driver came on the C.B. And stated the he was also a Vet.
And said." Yes I remember John Mc Cain. Isn't he the man that was put in charge of bringing our last few remaining P.O.W. out of Vietnam. Wasn't he the man that when people borough him evidence that there were still some of our men alive in Vietnam. He took the evidence and through it in the trash. Wrote those men off as dead. And closed the investigation.

Left them for dead!

Yes I believe that it was. It was John Mc Cain that did this to our men. The same John Mc Cain that is running for president now.
They are one and the same".

The silence was deafening.

Because every truck driver that is a Vet. Knew that it was true statement.
And this is the way it is in every truck stop in America now days.

Do you know what the number one question that Republicans are going around asking each other now days?

Is it all right for a full grown man, while still at the office, to break down and start to cry.

33. Nobody cared enough about it when it was going on, it's old news now
Don't get me wrong-I think Iran/Contra is one of the worst scandals of the 20th century-far bigger than Watergate or Bill's hummer. Reagan and his cabinet committed treason by arming one of our enemies, a country responsible for sponsoring attacks on our troops in Beiruit. Not to mention using the money raised from the arms sales to fund drug-dealing, nun-murdering scumbags in Nicauragua.

Oliver North is a hero, now, at least on FOX. Various officials involved later served in W's cabinet. Attacking McCain about this is not going to go anywhere.
