Bush numbers take an uptick (Gallup/CNN/USA Today)
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/02/09/elec04.poll.prez/index.html

As President Bush defended his record last week, his approval rating and his strength against the leading Democratic presidential contenders improved, according to a new poll, but the numbers still point to a close election.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll also showed Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts increasing his lead among registered Democrats, with a majority now saying they want him as their nominee to face Bush in November. The two men were virtually tied in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.

Bush's approval rating in the poll, conducted Friday through Sunday, was 52 percent, compared with 44 percent who said they disapproved. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

In a poll taken a week earlier, Bush's approval rating was at 49 percent -- the lowest of his presidency -- with 48 percent disapproving of Bush's performance.

11. simply the margin of error shifting
It still spells plenty of trouble, especially when you look back at the track record of CNN/USA Today/Gallup polls -- they have almost always put *'s approval higher than other polls.

14. Exactly... this is insignificant
Bush's numbers could very easily have gone the other way. Just a matter of polling a different group of people.

5. the trend is still good
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 12:00 AM by WorstPresidentEver
these numbers will always fluctuate both because of the type of pole and how good the sample is and also because opinions of people do change. the trend is still in the right direction though. Bush is beatable, never believe anyone who says otherwise WE ARE RIGHT. BUSH IS NOT FIT TO BE PRESIDENT! and people are starting to realize it.

There is no way to spin the Iraq situation and make Bush look good. I don't care how much money they have, how clever and devious Rove is or how sycophantic the media is, it is a still a giant fuck up. Plus there is the economy, jobs, health care, the environment, the deficit, the broken alliances & other foreign policy failures and on and on and on.

7. polls go up polls go down
I listened to Mario Cuomo last night and he's asking what the big issue will be? He doesn't see Viet Nam as having the big impact some do in this election. As long as the polls are all about Bush the election will be too. To win there needs to be some buzz about what the Dems will do..Kerry? Dean? someone needs to present an issue for the future. Bridge to the 21st Century ring a bell? Positive message to the future is where it's at.

8. Are we doing daily polls for Bush now? Why do I get the feeling
that someone, somewhere is screaming get those numbers up now!
Such utter bs. With the margin of error this isn't news
it is propaganda.

12. the issue will be health care
All the repugs see re: health care is trying to convince seniors that the Medicare Rx drug bill isn't the boondoggle that it is. But the health care debate has moved WAY BEYOND Rx drugs for the elderly and the repugs don't have a clue about how to fix it, except their gimmicky personal savings accounts. It will be an issue that brings many into the Dem fold this fall.

10. uh ... it's a three point difference, the margin of error is three points
didn't the dolt writing the article notice this?

Of course not, he was told to write a story how Bush's idiotic and pathetic performance on MTP was a "spirited defense" by Bush

15. This poll was pre-Meet the Press, pre 'jobs are everywhere!'
There has been so much negative media coverage in the past two days (even from the Wash Post!) I'd expect next week that *'s unpopularity will resume its escalation.
