More W.Va. voters say machines are switching votes; In six cases, Democratic votes flipped to GOP

Source: The Charleston Gazette

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week.

This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for "Barack Obama" kept flipping to "John McCain".

In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated.

They also blamed voters for not being more careful. . .

This is a new article that is a followup to the one I posted yesterday.

I think there is no longer any doubt that the GOP intends to try to steal the election in close states through election fraud.

Time to sound the alarm.

39. I'M GOING TO CALL MY SENATOR'S TOMORROW. I HOPE EVERYONE ELSE DOES AND TELL EVERYBODY YOU KNOW
TO DO THE SAME. AFTER THEY STEAL THE ELECTION THEY WILL JUST SAY "GET OVER IT!" LIKE THEY DID IN 2000 AND 2004.

TIME FOR PEOPLE TO GO INTO THE STREETS. I'M GOING TO SEND THIS LINK TO OBAMA TOO.

REALLY, EVERYBODY, WE NEED TO RAISE FUCKING HELL ABOUT THIS BEFORE THEY RAPE DEMOCRACY AGAIN!

RECOMMENDED - (of course).

ACORN charges from the intangible propaganda into the tangible world of the "we make our own reality"; And because they desperately need another Pug in office to rubber stamp the continuing conglomerate takeover of the media. Oh wait; That has already happened.

73. Because the GOP is screaming about REGISTRATION fraud
What's happening in West Virginia is ELECTION fraud. And even though election fraud is a million times more serious than registration fraud, the GOP is in charge of the voting machines and perfectly happy to ignore any election fraud as long as it's in their favor.

Paper ballots are the only way to go!

Its never the other way around. Why...never mind...I'm s weary of this. I just spent 3hrs/day
for three days distributing fliers for the Adams county(CO. Precinct#62). I'm partially
disabled and in a lot of pain. Sorry if i seem bitter...but I have had all I can take.
I vote early tomorrow and then I am done. Vacation next.

Has anyone ever encountered any machines switching votes from Republican to Democratic candidates?

I haven't, but I haven't personally seen one switching from a Democratic to a Republican candidate either, nor do I personally know anyone who has seen that.

ETA perhaps Democratic voters are more observant than Republicans.

This is the YouTube era. Lots of people have cell phone cameras and carry video recorders around.

The bottom line is "Video or it didn't happen". At least an eye witness other than the voter who is making the complaint would make these stories a whole lot more believable.

and mere voter REGISTRATION fraud, which of course is not even in the same league as voter fraud, to cover the legitimate voter fraud cases perpetrated by the GOP in the '00, '02, '04, '06, and soon to be '08 elections.

13. ELECTION fraud, not VOTER fraud
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 12:25 PM by Autumn Colors
Please, everyone, use the right terms when trying to get the MSM on board. Don't inadvertently help repeat GOP memes.

The key is who is supposedly perpetrating the fraud.

The GOP screams it's "voter fraud" to point the finger saying it's the voter committing the fraud (i.e. by falsifying voter registrations, etc).

When you talk about elections being stolen by machines flipping votes, purging eligible voters from voting rolls, etc, that is "election fraud". Perpetrated by those who would COUNT the votes, not those who cast them.

Let's keep the terms straight, shall we?

17. Please send this to the MSM- and let's make a promise that we all do this - every time-
with every report like this - every time we see one. AND it wouldn't hurt to send this also to the Obama campaign as well- the more we bombard the media with these reports, the more we raise our chance of having them pay attention. Maybe this is the year we finally break through the silence!

I saved this from a previous post from aa fellow DUer regarding contacting the media:

Here's your "CONTACT THE MEDIA NOW" friendly Assistant! DO SOMETHING!
Whether it is the Push to skew towards McCain, plain ol' GOP bias, blatant sexism, ugly racism, or just totally incorrect reporting.....give media a piece of your mind! Drop a tip on a good story to our "friends", holler at the biased ones, write a letter to the editor of newspapers!

Don't just get pissed; do something!

is a problem still. It shouldn't be showing the changes on the screen before recording the switched vote. I am sure they will fix it before November 4th.

The program is written to steal every third of fourth vote. If they steal too many
it would be too obvious. Can't have more votes cast than registered voters now can we?

32. Democratic lawyers needed in each of those polling places
If this vote fraud is occurring in specific polling places as recorded above, the local Democratic Party needs to get lawyers and film crews there. They need to notify Obama-Biden headquarters.

If I were a voter and the machine changed my vote I would be screaming bloody murder that the machine was not allowing me to vote. I would demand photographic evidence be recorded. I would scream loud enough so the attorneys outside could hear me and enter. I would demand witnesses. And yes, I would continue until I was arrested if necessary.

I cannot believe there are still states in which the citizens have allowed electronic voting without hard backup. In my county, all the ballots are read into a computer ballot box and validated instantly. However, all the paper ballots are retained in case of recount requests and or verification.

For county clerks to say "the problem is isolated" is confirmation that the problem exists. What more do the attorneys need.

More W.Va. voters say machines are switching votes
In six cases, Democratic votes flipped to GOP
By Paul J. Nyden

"People make mistakes more than machines," said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright.

Shelba Ketchum, a 69-year-old nurse retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital, described what happened Friday at the Putnam County Courthouse in Winfield.

"I pushed buttons and they all came up Republican," she said. "I hit Obama and it switched to McCain. I am really concerned about that. If McCain wins, there was something wrong with the machines.

"I asked them for a printout of my votes," Ketchum said. "But they said it was in the machine and I could not get it. I did not feel right when I left the courthouse. My son felt the same way.

Don't think that's allowed. Remember the concept of a secret ballot?

These voting machines actually enhance the secrecy of the ballot. Not even the voter knows who he voted for!

61. their own vote
A person could videotape their own vote. You are right about videotaping someone else's vote. Were someone caught doing that, THEN the media would be all over the story - "Dems intimidating voters, breaking the law!!!" I can just hear the right wing pundits going on and on about the sanctity of the secret ballot, and how Dems are destroying that.

45. Made a plea to Byrd and Rockefeller
Just sent this message to Byrd and Rockefeller, though I doubt it will do anything.

Dear Senator,

I am not one of your constituents but want to call out this example of election fraud.

http://www.sundaygazettemail.com/News/200810180251?page=2&build=cache

The Charleston Gazette-Mail is reporting multiple cases of electronic voting machines flipping votes from Democratic to Republican. The election officials in these counties are all Republican and are blaming the voters.

I know that this is a state responsibility, and therefore out of your span of control, however you are in a position to attract media attention to this issue.

The media attention paid to this ACORN issue is absurd. Fictitious voters do not show up to vote. However, when voters doing their patriotic and civic duty leave a polling place uncertain that their votes will be counted properly, our entire system of democracy is at stake.

Please Senator, use the power of your office to shine media attention on this issue so that it may be fixed before November 4.

55. If McCain "wins" what will you do?
I would hope that every Democrat would take to the streets until a proper investigation is done. Even if it means delaying the outcome for a month.

Of course it would be difficult to even prove anything in areas where they use machines with no paper trail, but if they could at least look at counties where exit polls were not supported by the votes cast it would be good.

Democrats should be ready to act if (when) Diebold etc. does it again.
Can you imagine the rabid right if this happened to them 3 times in row? My fear is that while a minority of good folks, like those on this board, may scream bloody murder and march for investigations, most moderate Democrats will fall in line and think its all hopeless.

I guess the key is Obama. Will he fold like a tent as Kerry and Gore did? Or will he risk being branded a 'sore loser' and having a tantrum if he stalls on conceding. The thing is he has a lot to lose but also a lot to gain if Diebold and other Repuke led companies are proven to have corrupted democracy. Not only would Barack be President, and Diebold executives led away in handcuffs, but America's voting system might finally have some oversight and hopefully a paper ballot system. That would fair well for Democrats in the future.

Write to whoever you wish. But in my opinion it ain't going to do anything beyond getting a little lip-service. Our corporate politicians and our corporate media have already been advised of this problem and have had plenty of evidence provided to them. Have they rectified the problem? Nope.

Then it seems our elections are to an extent just a circus act to have you and I believe we don't live under a corporate dictatorship.

I'm sure there are a lot of voters that did not think to watch to see how their vote registered. They know they selected correctly so they don't bother to watch and see what happens next. Of course that's what "they" are counting on. That people will never even catch it.

116. Paper is not a perfect solution.
It does at least give you the means for a manual recount. But the oldest form of election fraud was called "stuffing the ballot box." And it's pretty simple. Someone says, "Look, a UFO!" and when everyone looks that way, he slips a handful of previously filled out paper ballots into the ox. Or they wait for the one honest election worker to go to the restroom, then swap out the entire box.

The real solution is to win big.

"Yesterday I had the great pleasure of heading in to my county municipal office to vote early. I was SO excited to finally get the opportunity to "pull the lever" in this decision.

THE PROBLEM was that my touch-screen voting machine inaccurately put a green check mark in the McCain/Palin box when I touched my guy's name. I followed the instructions and touched the incorrect check mark to "de-select" it and then used my pinky instead of my index finger to select Obama/Biden. That wasn't the end of my frustration, though."

91. Must see documentary from Aljazeera International about the 2006 Sarasota vanishing votes scandal
People & Power: Protecting Democracy

In Florida not only have the election processes broken down but also the computerised voting machines and vote counting systems have failed and miscounted or lost votes.

In 2006, Sarasota County’s election suffered , 18,412 lost votes that were apparently cast, but never recorded by voting machines.

Florida Fair Elections is a grassroots group founded by Susan Pynchon. Susan and her colleagues investigated Sarasota’s lost votes, obtaining more than 10,000 election records.

Neither she, nor the Government Accountability Office in Washington DC who also researched a report, found where the votes went.

Now Susan Pynchon is running for the office of Supervisor of Elections as an election reform candidate and set out to observe, monitor and film the vote counting process in her county.

120. ...The key point being we have no way of knowing what vote registered
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 09:34 AM by slackmaster
Regardless of what the machine displayed on its screen at any given time.

Hand-counted paper is possible to control and audit. Electronic machines are not.

Frankly, I am very skeptical of statements like "the machines only switch Democratic votes to Republican". It may be that they switch votes randomly and Republicans aren't as observant as Democrats. Or that Democratic voters, sensitized by repeated stories of alleged election fraud, are more likely to notice unexpected behavior by the machines. One control to minimize the impact of error would be randomizing the order in which candidates appear on the ballot, as is done with paper systems. Has that been done with the electronic ones, and applied in such a manner that the programmers upstream could not predict which button corresponds to which candidate? That would not be hard to implement.

A systematic rigging of the vote by machines would require either a very large conspiracy that went all the way down to the county registrar level, or a very small one consisting of hard-core techies who have been corrupted by high-level party operatives. In either case the conspirators would have to be uncommonly loyal to their cause. Even in a very compact operation, there is always a chance one or more programmers, QA managers, etc. would become alienated and turn state's evidence against their leaders.

I'm not saying there is nothing going on, but I find it curious that after eight years of this there still isn't a smoking gun. Sure, we have a few videos of former Diebold employees and consultants talking about suspicious activity and a general disregard for proper stewardship over the public trust. Many people have gone on at length about how such a fraud COULD be perpetrated, but not one person has yet come right out and said that he or she has seen it personally.

119. Now that's Funny
Flipping was reported in Texas when they voted straight ticked. See Texas DU Page.

The thing is that Wwhen ever you vote straight ticked. You only mark one box.
There is no way possible that they could have made a mistake.
You don't mark any other boxes.
The guy that wrote the program for this machine must have been a moron.

He just screw the pouch.

You can't switch the presidential vote. When you mark one box. The straight ticket box.
That's why I voted straight ticket. There can be no mistakes this way. It's the smart thing to do these days.
If every body voted straight ticket. It would be really hard to explain how all those votes came up for Mc Cain. Now wouldn't it.
We're talking Voter Fraud big time here.
They are so sued right now.
The people that made those machines have just committed Voter Fraud. That's a felon. A crime.
Proof of a felony is also proof of a court. In a civil action.
They have just violated your civil right.
We can collect 10,000 dollars for vote that was switched. From the people that made the voting machines. 10.000 X 200,000 voters. That's a lot of money.

Must have been another Bush appointee.

It's all starting to make sense now.

Bush has tied the hand of the Justice Department. The courts will not allow any such suits to move forward.

When Obama get in to office. He is going to take the chain out from around the neck of the Justice Department and turn them lose.
Now that's funny.

An official from the manufacturer of touch-screen voting machines is on the way to West Virginia following complaints that people in two counties saw their votes switched by the machines.

Secretary of State Betty Ireland says an official with Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software is heading to West Virginia to look into the complaints, which come from Putnam and Jackson counties.

Ireland says the machines have been repeatedly tested and are reliable. She believes some of the voters may be touching the wrong parts of the screen, and says voters should tell poll workers when there's a problem.

Ireland says she wants an official from the company to check the machines to make sure voters have absolute confidence in the process.
