'NYT' Profile of Cindy Draws Angry McCain Response -- Including Release of Email and Facebook
Source: Editor and Publisher

By Greg Mitchell

NEW YORK The New York Times published today a lengthy profile of Cindy McCain, including material on some of her misstatements and former drug addiction. The McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb has now labeled it "gutter journalism" and a "trash report" and released copies of what it says is an email and a Facebook message from a Times reporter allegedly "trolling" for information.

One quote from the McCain team: "This campaign made every effort to share personal accounts of Mrs. McCain's good works with the paper, but apparently they were deemed unfit for publication in the New York Times. This is gutter journalism at its worst -- an unprecedented attack on a presidential candidate's spouse.

"In order to assemble this barrage of petty and personal attacks, the New York Times employed tactics that are obviously unprofessional and almost certainly unethical. This campaign has obtained a copy of an email sent by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor to a 16-year-old girl and friend of Bridget McCain, the youngest of the McCain children. Ms. Kantor sought to dupe the unsuspecting minor by soliciting ‘advice' on how best to approach the story, as if a top-flight investigative reporter at the New York Times would need the assistance of an underage girl in writing a hit piece."

The Times article says that Cindy McCain refused requests for an interview. It does report on her charity work while also pointing out some discrepancies in how she has described a trip to Rwanda.

...considering they roll in the gutter and talk trash day in and day out?!

True - they dish it out all over the place, then squeal like stuck pigs at the slightest hint of anyone saying anything true about their Glaring Shortcomings. R

5. Well, there's one good thing you can say about Cindy.
At least she didn't, as far as we know, run over her ex-boyfriend with a car and kill him, unlike the wife of the previous Republican nominee.

6. Sarah Palin recently cited the Times as a credible source in its front-page reporting of Bill Ayers.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 04:47 PM by 1Hippiechick
Quoted directly from the article! :silly:  As I have said repeatedly: the repukes have painted themselves into a corner by vilifying the news! The repukes can't call them credible and then yellow journalists when it suits their fancy!

Sarah Failin commends them as credible on the Bill Ayres piece, but now the repukes are firing off letters because of NYT's sleazy, underhanded journalistic approaches?!?!?

Sorry, dumbasses--you can't have it both ways!

30. Palin misrepresented the NYT piece on Ayers...
they played down the connection with Obama,
and portrayed him as a redeemed, contributing member of society.

Palin took the article, and reframed it around her own
interpretation. God knows that woman can't read things straight!

11. I disagree
It read as an apologetic puff piece. 'Poor Cindy McCain! She's had all this hardship in her life but she's still strong and admirable.'

10. McCain and his entire campaign need to STOP THE WHINING ALREADY.
If there are any inaccuracies in the Times piece then they have a right to protest. AFAIK, the Times piece is accurate and fair. Stop the whining, John. This isn't even a hardball piece. Even if it was, aren't you the guy who said it's time to take the gloves off? Did you think you were the only candidate wearing gloves?

STOP YOUR WHINING. IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THIS HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DEAL WITH REAL PRESSURE?

16. Somebody call a whaambulance
Two things struck me about the McCain response

1. The outraged tone of how dare they report on the candidate's spouse. This after the spouse decided to interject herself into the campaign by attacking Obama at rallies.

2. They never pass up a chance to take the low road. They use the opportunity to raise questions about both Obamas.

I wish they would quit whining all the time! It was not an unsympathetic piece and no real new revelations were uncovered.

38. Kitty Dukakis was no Cingy McCain
She was and is a far better person.

I do think the story of emailing a 16 year old, if true and as stated, was wrong. However, the Republicans have treated Michele Obama worse. In 2004, the Republican parts of the media smeared the brilliant philanthropist Teresa with as many lies as were used against her husband - even though many Republicans loved her when she was married to John Heinz. Here, there is no need to lie about Cindy, the truth is bad.

24. Actually I
am grateful to the nyt for making this information available, it seems to clear up a lot of things I have read in the past and supports that she has attempted to do good works only to fail due to drug addiction. I have seen it happen to lots of people in the past and this is an issue of the past. However, it does seems that Mrs. McCain hasn´t done any good lately. So my thoughts lead to the fact that she was moved to do good works not by her good will but her drug addiction. And as far a trying to be a Princess Diana, well Cindy you sure as hell are not even close to Princess Diana. So to the McCain family stop your whining, they say the truth hurts and maybe so, it´s your bed you slept in it and then you made it.

26. If they could not be a victim, they would have absolutely nothing
since that's all McCain's campaign is about. They are all victims. They are victims of Obama being anti-American, they are victims of the crash of the economy and they need to turn the page, they are victims every time they turn around.

a real slash and burn piece, but it was mild. Their reaction to it is overblown imo.

McCain came off as more of a cold, thoughtless, absent husband; but Cindy seemed more human to me.

33. McCain Camp Fires Back at Times for Cindy McCain Story
Source: faux

John McCain's campaign is expressing outrage over a New York Times story that focuses on Cindy McCain's marriage to the Arizona senator, including her miscarriages, her past addiction to painkillers and her failure in Washington to fit in. ...

... "The Times has reported vigorously on the backgrounds of the candidates and the influential people in their lives, including both prospective first ladies. We reported where the facts led us," Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis said in a written statement to FOXNews.com.

"The story was a richly reported, completely fair, respectful -- even empathetic -- profile of a would-be first lady," Mathis added. "The material is almost all from named sources, and the McCain campaign has not disputed a single fact." ...

But YOU, John, found her to be "fair game".
