Mervyns to liquidate remaining stores
Source: LA Times

After 59 years in business, the Mervyns department-store chain called it quits Friday -- promising a huge going-out-of-business sale just in time for the holidays.

The shuttering of Mervyns represents another blow to Southern California's long-declining department-store scene.

Over the last four decades, many of the names that anchored shopping malls and fashionable boulevards have faded -- May Co., Robinson's, Bullock's, Broadway, Buffum's, I. Magnin -- as chains merged and consumers shifted their buying from department stores to less expensive discounters like Target and Wal-Mart.

1. A friend of mine works for a major liquidator.
His company has $2.5 billion dollars of inventory on hand.

Their projection for '09 includes 20,000 closed retailers.

5. Going downhill is right.
The last time I went into a Mervyn's store, I noticed a few problems:
a broken escalator;
a locked rest room;
merchandise on the floor, in no particular order;
dirt everywhere.

I'm surprised the chain lasted as long as it did.

4. I liked it too until fairly recently

but the quality has gone way down hill in just the last couple of years. I still have many garments I bought there years ago when their quality was good. Some even have made in the USA labels or union labels. Yes, I'm a packrat. LOL. But it's sad to think that not so very long ago reasonably priced stores like Mervyns actually sold union made clothing made in the USA.
