Grandfather Is Held in Case of Kidnapped Nevada Boy
Source: New York Times

LAS VEGAS — The grandfather of a Nevada boy who was kidnapped from his home by men trying to collect drug money has been arrested in California, law enforcement officials said.

Police officials said they hoped the grandfather, Clemens Tinnemeyer, would help them identify the men who burst into a suburban Las Vegas home about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday and left with his 6-year-old grandson, Cole Puffinburger. Capt. Vincent Cannito of the Las Vegas Police Department said three men broke into the home and bound and gagged the boy’s mother and her fiancé while demanding money. The men ransacked the house but appeared to fail to find what they sought and left with the boy at gunpoint, Captain Cannito said.

Mr. Tinnemeyer, 51, was arrested late Friday in Riverside, Calif., by federal marshals. He was being held in San Bernardino. Captain Cannito said Friday that the break-in and kidnapping might be tied to a debt owed by Mr. Tinnemeyer to members of a Mexican drug cartel. The police captain said that Mr. Tinnemeyer had “stolen a large sum of money, all proceeds from illegal drug activity,” and that police investigators believed the money was the primary target of the kidnappers.

“They wanted to send a very clear message,” Captain Cannito said. “Message sent, message received. They’ve got the attention of an entire nation.”

3. Ugly case....
...the LVPD called off the Amber alert. Something tells me that something very ugly has taken place.

I read in another article that the grandfather owed the Mexican drug dealer between $8 - $20 MILLION!

:wow:

5. The article didn't really make sense - it sounded like the grandfather
was directly implicated in the kidnapping, but my actual interpretation is that he may have paid the ransom?

6. What I understand is that the grandfather "took" a ton of money from...

...some Mexican drug dealers. Like between $8 - $20 MILLION. He was in hiding and they wanted their money. To get the attention of the grandfather, the dealers broke in and kidnapped his grandson.

The LVPD has called off the search and from what I am hearing, this is not good news at this stage of the game.

2. All caused by a "war" on drugs
that has done nothing to stop drug usage and has gone a long way to support violent gangs. Decriminalize drugs, realize that drug abuse is a medical and not a criminal problem, and this tragedy would not have happened.

4. I have to agree....
...as far as I am concerned, both drug use and prostitution should be legalized.

Making it a crime has NEVER stopped this conduct and never will.

10. that's a terrible thing to wish for....
The grandfather didn't do anything to his grandson-- the Mexican gangsters did. Sure, the grandfather ripped off the gangsters. But THEY'RE responsible for what they might or might not have done to his grandson. If I piss off my neighbor, and he goes out in a rage and kills an innocent bystander, is that MY fault? Of course not!

11. Rediculous
We're not talking about small time druggies here. If the grandfather allegedly owes these thugs anywhere from 7 to 20 million dollars, we're not talkin' high school. These guys are big time across the border drug dealers and anybody that knows anything about the big guys KNOWS that nothing and no one is off limits if a debt is owed.

These people don't fuck around and to suggest that the grandfather would be oblivious and/or somehow innocent of that fact that these guys mean some serious business is sorely naive.
