ZOO OWNER'S SUSPECT BBQS
I'm not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, but there is something that's just not right about this (a trust issue, I suppose):

A zoo owner is being investigated over allegations he ate his own wild animals.

It is suspected Joerg Schlechte may have used the zoo as his personal larder.

He has already been fined for roasting pot-bellied pigs during a drunken barbeque.

But now police in Germany are looking into the fate of a host of missing animals.

They include a small buffalo, rabbits, donkeys, goats, racoons, parrots, a wild boar and even three Shetland ponies.

More . . .

2. Sicko
I am a vegetarian and I hate zoos, but how can someone who is charged with the care of these animals eat them? That's just so wrong.

4. Frankly, what's the difference
between him and a farmer who raises cows, pigs, and goats. They feed them, clean up after them, get them medical care. Then they eat them. How is this any different than what the zookeeper did.

BTW, I am a vegetarian. Do you think my bias shows? ;-)

5. Zookeepers are in the BUSINESS of keeping animals alive and well
Farmers aren't.

He DID break a trust.

11. There isn't a difference
People only think there is a difference because the cows on farms aren't there for our entertainment. We can't we our entertainment, can we?

Or our pets. We don't eat our pets.

7. I am a veggie, but when
I ate meat, I have eaten goat, rabbit, and horse. All were excellent. Buffalo is good, but a little strong for some people's taste. raccoon is supposed to be good, but I have never tried it. Oppossom is good, but greasy.

9. Are any of those species endangered?
Without the type of parrots specified, I would say not.
The only thing the guy's guilty of is theft from his employer, effectively embezzeling. Serious, yes, but hardly worthy of note.

10. GD The SB I want to roast him & serve him up to some wild animals
How damn disgusting could he be? The jerk needs to be cooked and served to some wild boars or any type of animal that would eat the piece of SHIT!

I eat meat all of the time but what he has done is beyond disgusting.

12. Take some valium,
settle down, and then explain in a reasoned fashion what you find so disgusting. You've said you're not a vegetarian, so that isn't your problem, so what is?

"The jerk needs to be cooked and served to some wild boars or any type of animal that would eat the piece of SHIT!"

I find your statement more disturbing than what he did.

13. Cultural differences, eh?
In Vietnam, potbellied pigs are not pets. And the other animals are probably meat in other countries.

Think the issue is why would a zookeeper kill the subjects? This seems to be an incomplete story.

16. This is rubbish
The source is the German tabloid Bild, well known for exaggerating or even inventing stories. This guy really exists, he is a local politician, and the vets had forced the zoo to close back in 2000. He tried to reopen it several times. This is reported by some sources.

There is another claim he was given a fine for serving the meat of one of the pigs. Seems doubtfull to me, if it was his own animal, he had any right to do this. It was just an exotic race of pigs, like it is raised in Asia, not even a wild or even protected species.

The rest of the story are just wild claims, since some animals are missing from the zoo. He claims to have given them to girls that have cared for the animals. I guess he just sold the animals, or some just plainly have escaped.
