A simple choice: The nation needs Barack Obama in the White House (Salt Lake Tribune)
Source: The Salt Lake Tribune

Tribune Editorial
Article Last Updated: 10/17/2008 08:06:04 PM MDT

The next U.S. president will lead a nation that remains embroiled in two wars and is beset by an economic meltdown more severe than any since the Great Depression.
By necessity, the country's next commander in chief must also be its mender in chief, capable of inspiring his angry and divided constituents to join together in a recovery project to restore the peace, prosperity, and self-confidence we once knew.
We fear that a lesser effort may be insufficient to reverse America's slide toward economic, political and societal chaos. The times require dramatic and comprehensive change.
The presidential candidates know it, and have made it their mantra.
Most Americans know it, and, in growing numbers, are demanding it.
The countries that have long depended upon the United States for enlightened global leadership long for it.
For the sake of all, and for those who follow us, we must have it.
The editorial board of The Salt Lake Tribune believes that Barack Obama can deliver it.

snip

Indeed, we see too many of Bush's failed policies in McCain's recipe for recovery. The country desperately needs a new and well-defined road map for the 21st century and leadership that can unite the country behind it.
We believe that Barack Obama can give us both.

14. It's only the newspaper. THEY are still mcSame/Lipstick Pig supporters.
Good people, those I met in SLC and other parts of Utah. But like it's neighbors to the north, the red neck Wyomingites, these folks line up behind the "anti abortion" mantra, as though it makes a real difference in this world. Save 10 embryos, kill a million Muslim men, women and children. Go figure.

Still a red state.

15. We'll see who Deseret News endorses.
SLT is the secular newspaper in town, Deseret is the semi-official Mormon one.

21. no, the mormons are not switching sides
unless the church leaders tell them too

which they have not

and will not

The Salt Lake Tribune used to be a dem paper, owned by a catholic family but has gotten more and more conservative.

It is not as big a shock that the SL Trib supports Obama as the Chicago Tribune does

but still, nice to hear.

The SL Trib got TONS of angry letters when they endorsed Bush in 2004

8. I think Utah will be closer than people think..
I live in Salt Lake and I've seen tons of Obama bumpers stickers and signs. Not a McCain sign or bumper sticker in sight. McCain will more than likely win Utah's electoral votes, but it will be much closer than he would like it to be.

16. Salt Lake City area
Yeah Obama will win the Salt Lake city counties but he will not win anywhere outside of that area. I live in Ogden, I've never seen any Obama signs, bumperstickers or anything. It will be a 66% - 33% is my guess.

29. Mormons are actually a minority in SLC
A powerful one mind you. In a state with the second largest Mormon population, Idaho having more Mormons then Utah does.

6. making up for taking marriage away from those pesky degenerates in California? btw why does the morm
on church not run a campaign against divorce, which is a violation of jesus' belief system? even christians agree with mormons that divorce is not so great, yet they do it in half of all marriages or so.

19. Utahns will say one thing and do another (in the closet)...
I lived there for many years, as and adult. People there are never what they appear to be on the surface. I would be shocked if Obama won the state, but he will win Salt Lake and Davis counties.

26. If you don't know anything about Mormonism, it's not what you probably think...
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 07:06 AM by lelgt60
I'm Jewish, married to a Mormon (not enough time to go into that...). While I'm quite surprised at the endorsement, I'm not surprised that many people in Utah would support Obama.

While Mormons, like any religion, have their share of ignorant zealots who don't understand their own religion, it is, at the least, a truly fascinating set of beliefs. Many of them are quite "good" from a progressive perspective.

Intelligent Mormons believe they are blessed at being born in the USA, but don't believe that helps them in any way in the long run. "To whom much is given, much is expected". And they think a lot about the long run. And, among the many ways things they are instructed to do, providing considerable help to those with less than they do, is one of the important ones.

Also, unlike most predominantly white groups in the USA, they have been the subject of quite extreme discrimination (to the point of being killed). When they run for office outside the Mormon west, it's definitely an issue.

If you haven't read about them in detail from a few different sources, what you hear from the MSM, and see in shows like "Big Love",that is, what you think you know, is probably pretty wrong.

As I said, if you are interested in that type of thing, I definitely think you'd enjoy reading about one of the few (other than native) "American" religions. In fact, most of the Mormon story takes place in North/South American between 500BC to around 500AD.

BTW - How come Obama comes up as an incorrect word in the spell checker???
