GOP Senator Slams McCain Robo Call
Source: ABC News

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Rigel Anderson report: Embattled Republican Sen. Susan Collins is calling on Sen. John McCain to stop paying for automated phone calls which describe Sen. Barack Obama as having "worked closely" with "domestic terrorist Bill Ayers."

"These kind of tactics have no place in Maine politics," said Collins spokesman Kevin Kelley. "Sen. Collins urges the McCain campaign to stop these calls immediately."

Contacted on Friday by ABC News, the McCain campaign would not say if it was going to heed the request of Collins who serves as his campaign's co-chair in Maine.

"Obviously, Sen. McCain has great respect for Sen. Collins. But beyond that," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers, "we don't have any comment."

12. No she's not. It's all part of the act.
There have been none of Bush's key issues that she has disagreed with.

It's a sham. She needs to go.

4. Was anybody killed in the Weatherman attacks?
"Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home and killed Americans."

Is that true? (I don't really care from a moral standpoint: it doesn't have any bearing on Obama, but I just want gauge how totally full of shit Republicans are. ;-) )

21. oh, I was referring just to the second part... ;-)
I'd just never heard that there were any victims in the bombings, and since I had heard that Carter pardoned them, I'd think it strange that they'd be pardoned if people had died.

35. This is an illustration of the 24/7 corporate cable media. We've been hearing about this Ayres
thing since the primaries (off and on). Yet they don't take the time to provide those kind of basic facts along with it to put things into context. Not that the act of bombing the Pentagon is right, but I think knowing facts about the casualties of the Weather Underground bombings would influence public opinion (though certainly not in the direction desired by the corporate media). 24/7 coverage and they can't give basic facts? That is no accident or coincidence. The Republicans are strongly suggesting that the group bomb the Pentagon and actually killed people.

31. One of networks this morning said there were no fatalities or no judge's home bombed
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 08:02 AM by wishlist
One of the mainstream networks debunked the robocall this morning, saying that Obama was only 8 during the activities and also that there were no lives lost or house bombing linked to Ayers.

5. Susan Collins, his Maine campaign co-chairperson. What a shame.
I used to hold out hope for her that she'd snap out of it, and distance from these criminals. Looks like she's in it for the duration. God knows she can't claim ignorance any longer. Her party has nearly destroyed the entire planet in the last 8 years.

Screw Susan Collins. Hope she'll go down with the ship.

9. I think she HAS to say that. She got elected because she's a moderate, I think.
As Republicans go, I like Sen. Collins. And she IS a moderate. But a "this sort of thing has no place here" comment is pretty mild and is an expected comment from someone trying to show her constituents that she's not one of those mean ol' nasty far right Republicans. Her statement is better than nothing and does HER some good. Beyond that, it's worthless and doesn't stop the hate speech.

10. The Maine Democratic Party called for her to denounce these calls
She didn't do it on her own!

Maine residents across the state picked up their telephones yesterday, only to be greeted by automatic calls saying that Senator Barack Obama worked closely with a terrorist. The Obama campaign has condemned the ads.

Susan Collins should do the same, said Maine Democratic Party communications director Rebecca Pollard. "As John McCain's Maine campaign co-chair, Senator Collins should tell her candidate that false and offensive robocalls have no place in Maine and they should be stopped immediately."

"Susan Collins likes to decry any television ad questioning her votes and positions as automatically 'negative,' so let's see if she will apply the same standard when it comes to blatantly false phone calls personally attacking the Democratic Presidential candidate, Barack Obama," Pollard said.

11. How disgusting...

McCain can't run on his policies or the American people would find out he has about as much intelligence as his running mate and nothing but an even worse extension of the Bush years. So instead he has to resort to low blows, lies, and dishonorable tactics.

I need to take a closer look at Bill Maher's destinations to move to in case stubby and his devil in disguise actually get elected.

As far as I am concerned that makes her responsible for what the campaign does in the state.

She's no babe in the woods. She knew what kind of sleazeballs she was signing up with.

28. That's nauseating.
Those kinds of deceptive ads are only inappropriate in Maine? Collins could have done the right thing and denounced the ads, but, instead, she only complains because the ads are hurting her.

That's reprehensible and revolting.

34. mccain's got a revolting radio commercial on ayres in west palm beach
says obama was in a terrorist group with ayres

says obama said ayres "was just a guy"

says what is obama trying to hide

they have no shame.

on a positive note, though, obama's campaign has
come up with a great response commercial saying
that obama was only eight years old during that
time, that obama is vehemently opposed to his
tactics, and that ayres would have no place in
obama's administration.

obama's fighting back and it is quite satisfying
to watch!
