Sarah Palin put a new spin today on the Republican ticket's daily criticism of Barack Obama:

It's not "meanspirited" or "negative campaigning" to "call someone on their record and associations," it's only being fair to voters.

"We do need to know more clearly about the choice we have on Nov. 4th," Palin told supporters in West Chester, Ohio.

The GOP vice presidential candidate said that the ubiquitous Joe the plumber -- Joe Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio -- finally got a "straight answer" from Obama on his tax plans, when the Democrat told him that he wants to "spread the wealth."

Wurzelbacher, she noted, has described that as socialism. "Whatever you call it, I call it bad medicine for an ailing economy," Palin said.

When you already know the code, you read what she is saying and you know what she really means as you're reading it. But if you don't know the code or the premise behind it - that which makes it code - then people like Palin can get away with saying anything and it doesn't sound that bad or it doesn't sound as bad as it actually is...

And that ability to mask in code is what allows the poison to spread quietly into people's thinking
