Poll: Obama Opens 14-Point Lead On McCain
Source: CBS News/NY Times

(CBS) Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is entering the third and final presidential debate Wednesday with a wide lead over Republican rival John McCain nationally, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows.

The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin. One week ago, prior to the Town Hall debate that uncommitted voters saw as a win for Obama, that margin was just three points.

Among independents who are likely voters - a group that has swung back and forth between McCain and Obama over the course of the campaign - the Democratic ticket now leads by 18 points. McCain led among independents last week.

8. McCain led Independents last week
Now Obama has an eighteen point lead. If things change that quickly in our favor they could just as easily change back. Though for the life of me I can not see how..

18. I don't think things can change back so easily. Here's why.
1. Most of the changes come from Undecided voters finally deciding.

2. A lot of people have already voted. I myself voted for Obama this morning. It's too late to change my mind. Same goes for lots of Americans.

3. The economy is not favoring Republicans in the slightest.

2. Good, but not good enough!!
we MUST win by a landslide because the repukes will be lying and cheating all the way up to and including election day. they will do everything they can to suppress the vote. voter rolls have been purged by repukes all over this country. we CANNOT claim victory until November 5th. DO NOT STOP FIGHTING FOR OBAMA JUST BECAUSE THE POLL NUMBERS LOOK GOOD.

7. Agreed keep working as hard as you can. We need a massive
victory just to win. Look at Mexico that was a dry run for this election. The right wing were down by at least 10% and they still
pulled out a "Win". It caused protests but the right wing still managed to get the presidency. We need as big a vote as possible to prevent Diebold's machines from declaring the republicans winners.

3. Apparently...
The rabid and frothing wingnuts at McFeeb's and MooseBreath's swinging campaign soires are some of the best campaigners for Obama/Biden out there.

That said, if and when O/B get elected, a lot of these dead-enders are gonna go off and go off ugly. That is what they are being whiipped up to do and I doubt they will disappoint.

I really hope I get a job soon. One of the first things I have to get, as much as I don't want to, is a Mossy or 570, with an 18''-20" barrel and extended tube. And a bandolier. And a light. Shit.

20. Yeah!
Whatever you do, don't get over-confident or complacent. What with those wonky voting machines and vote suppression, you'll still need every vote you can get.

Best wishes from a Canadian fan. I have a friend, a retired teacher, who'll be heading out to Florida soon to help with the Obama campaign. A lot of progressive Canadians are rooting for you guys. I worry that a McCain administration will start another war and screw up the world economy.

9. That line..

..is from a very old song that predates Springsteen. Dylan sung it in 1962 and I'm sure it goes back further than that.

10. It was originally a gospel song called "Hold On" or "Gospel Plow"
In the 50s, a civil rights activist named Alice Wine reworked it into the song we know today.

Odetta sung the original- "Keep your hand on the plow and hold on"...

During the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's "eyes on the prize" was adapted...

That is the version The Boss covers... and it STILL gives me goosebumps!

12. Honestly, this is probably an outlier
My guess is Obama's real number right now is roughly around the major polling averages -- somewhere between 6 and 8 points.

Still, good number to see!

Despite McCorpse and Poison Palin's desperate attempt to save their campaign, their filthy antics haven't stopped voters from making it clear they want Obhama/Biden in office, not them.

I just pray we don't have another rigged election!!!!!!

30. Yeah, they are funny.
Last week, when it was just 3 points, and Obama and McCain were about tied with Independents, the freepers were clinging to it as the "reference" and ignored all others.

Suddenly, now that's a 14 point margin for Obama, the same freepers that clung to it last week now claim it's worthless.

If any news source disagrees with their point of view, they label it as the "liberal media".

Sometimes the truth just hurts. Guess they haven't learned that little lesson yet.

34. Poll Finds Attacks by McCain Turn Off Voters
Source: NYT

The McCain campaign’s recent angry tone and sharply personal attacks on Senator Barack Obama appear to have backfired and tarnished Senator John McCain more than their intended target, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll has found.

After several weeks in which the McCain campaign unleashed a series of strong political attacks on Mr. Obama, trying to tie him to a former 1960s radical, among other things, the poll found that more voters see Mr. McCain as waging a negative campaign than Mr. Obama. Six in 10 voters surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president; by about the same number, voters said Mr. Obama was spending more of his time explaining than attacking.

Over all, the poll found that if the election were held today, 53 percent of those determined to be probable voters said that they would vote for Mr. Obama and 39 percent said they would vote for Mr. McCain.

(snip)

Voters who said that their opinions of Mr. Obama had changed recently were twice as likely to say that they had gotten better as to say they had gotten worse. And voters who said that their views of Mr. McCain had changed were three times more likely to say that they had gotten worse than to say they had improved.

The top reasons cited by those who said that thought less of Mr. McCain were his recent attacks and his choice of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate. (The vast majority said that their opinions of Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee, and Mr. McCain, the Republican nominee, had remained unchanged in recent weeks.) But in recent days, Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin have scaled back their attacks on Mr. Obama, although Mr. McCain suggested he might aggressively take on Mr. Obama in Wednesday’s debate.

I saw that an Ipsos poll released today also had him at 39%, but I think the CBS poll is a bigger deal for the name recognition.

Do you all realize the record the repiggies are running on?

14% is not a landslide considering.
