Prompted by a rash of bad press, Cabinet members barraged Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning with questions Tuesday over the state’s ability to avoid another 2000-esque election meltdown.
Spurred by reports that Florida could have 30,000 inelgible felons on its voting rolls and that swarms of lawyers are again descending on the state, as well as the state's lingering problems re-instituting its controversial “no match” voter ID law, Browning issued a stern vote of confidence in the state’s voting system.
“Florida is ready for the Nov. 4 general election,” Browning said.
Gov. Charlie Crist seconded that notion, but several members of the Cabinet sounded a little less sure.

“To me, the biggest disenfranchisement in America is allowing people who are not citizens, who are not eligible to vote, to influence the elections in this country and this state by illegally voting,” said Bronson, a Republican.

He also reminded the Cabinet of the “fierce attack” the state came under in 2000 and 2004 for trying to automatically kick out voters who might have been felons.
“We err on the side of the voter,” he said. “The presumption is, by law, that the voter is eligible to vote and not a convicted felon.”
Democratic CFO Alex Sink was concerned about the potential for long lines at the polls Nov 4 – given that nearly 11 million Floridians are now registered to vote and turnout could reach 85 percent.
Browning, however, said lines weren’t really a bad thing and compared them to lines families face at Disney World.
“Lines are a sign of a healthy democracy, and we are expecting those lines to be at the polls,” Browning said, adding he was sure there would be ample staffing and equipment for voters.
