Marín's GOP Senate bid aims to prove electability

By Aurelio Rojas -- Bee Capitol Bureau
Published 2:15 a.m. PST Monday, February 9, 2004

Rosario Marín has a story to tell about a Mexican immigrant who overcomes poverty to become a mayor and the highest-ranking Latina in the Bush administration.

It's her story, and the former U.S. treasurer and mayor of Huntington Park recounts it to tout her perseverance as she campaigns for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in the March 2 primary.

She tells how she became an advocate for the disabled after her son, Eric, was born with Down syndrome. As a Latina who supports abortion rights, she also holds herself out as the GOP's best hope of denying Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer a third term.

But some party leaders believe the jump to the Senate may be too much of a leap for someone whose résumé highlights are mayor of a poor East Los Angeles city and the largely ceremonial treasurer's post.
