Contract losses trigger BlueCross BlueShield layoffs (1,579 jobs)

Twice last year, big health insurer BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina lost big federal contracts, both related to Tricare, the military's health insurance program.

Last week, workers around the state began getting their layoff notices.

Some 1,579 BlueCross employees in Columbia, Florence, Myrtle Beach and Camden received notices that their jobs are being terminated. No workers are being laid off in the Charleston area.

The layoffs will begin in August, the company said, so workers can spend six months looking for jobs. Those people laid off will receive severance pay, and the company also hopes to move many of the workers to other divisions.
