Two U.S. Soldiers Die Clearing Explosives in Iraq
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 10:09 AM by Barrett808
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two U.S. soldiers were killed and six were wounded Monday while trying to clear explosives in northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.

The explosion, which occurred near the city of Sinjar outside Mosul in northern Iraq, appeared to be an accident, a spokeswoman for the military said.

"They were conducting explosive ordnance disposal when it happened," Sergeant Sonja Whittington said.

Sinjar is about 250 miles north of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Two US soldiers were killed and six wounded in an accidental explosion in northern Iraq.

The blast occurred at Sinjar, 120 kilometres (74 miles) west of the main northern city of Mosul, while the troops were involved in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), a US spokesman said Monday.

"There were two US soldiers killed and two wounded in northern Iraq in the Sinjar area while conducting EOD operations."

4. Leap Year in Iraq
By the end of the month, there will be 35-40 (and maybe more) American soldiers - young men and women in their prime of life, healthy, with families, friends and colleagues, full of love and laughter - who will be dead. Dead. Because of this war. Almost a guarantee at this point. These will be the February dead - the first February dead, and one can only hope the only February dead.

Think of them now, nervously fingering a trigger, or relaxing on a berm, or playing soccer with some kids, or reading a magazine. See them sitting in their cots, or scanning the deadly horizon, or writing a letter. Sad vision.

The motherfucker hasn't scarfed them up yet, so their eyes still light up the desert, their boots still mark the city streets with a history of movement. But the motherfucker has its days and nights, its hours and its averages. The motherfucker says one thing:

TIME IS ON MY SIDE.

5. MSNBC was sure to remind everyone that these are not combat deaths
So I guess that means they don't count or something? Assholes.

6. Why? Who laid the mines?
If they were our mines, well OK, if that's the case then this was a monumental screwup. What the hell is Bremer doing over there?

If these mines were laid to injure our troops, well then they did their job and these deaths should be considered to be combat related.

8. Halliburton was bragging the other day that clearing explosives was THEIR
job, and that they were doing it "so the soldiers wouldn't have to be in a dangerous situation." (I paraphrase)

So, where was Brown and Root when the going got tough?

9. Haliburton and their kind.
Hire ex- Military EODs pays them well, overcharges the taxpayers and pockets the difference. We ex EODs get many offers of employment in the EOD Field. Friends of mine that have worked EOD for civilian contractors generally work one job and quit as safety is not considered.
