Pulling Away Obama opens a double-digit lead in new NEWSWEEK poll( 52 to 41)

The global financial meltdown has caused a dramatic shift in the 2008 presidential race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. With four weeks left in the presidential campaign, Barack Obama now leads John McCain by double digits, 52 percent to 41 percent among likely voters—a marked shift from the last Newsweek poll, conducted one month ago, when the two candidates were tied at 46 percent.

Underlying Obama's surge in support: An historic boiling over of dissatisfaction with the status quo. An astounding 86 percent of voters now say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, while a mere 10 percent say they are satisfied. That's the highest wrong track/right track ratio ever recorded in the NEWSWEEK poll.

For context on just how toxic these numbers could be for the Republic party, consider that in October, 2006, weeks before the Democrats swept control of both houses of Congress, only 61 percent of voters expressed dissatisfaction. Twenty-five percent of voters say they approve of the job President Bush is doing in the White House, a record low for any president in the NEWSWEEK poll and close to the historic low-approval rating of 22 percent the Gallup poll recorded for President Truman, in 1952. Voters are crying out for change and, for now, believe that the Democratic presidential candidate has a greater likelihood of delivering it. Asked which ticket they thought was most likely to bring about change if elected, voters said Obama-Biden over McCain-Palin 52 percent to 37 percent. A month ago, Obama-Biden led by only five points, 47 percent to 42 percent.

Obama appears to have broadened his coalition of support and made inroads with groups that have not reliably embraced him over the course of the long presidential campaign. He now leads McCain among both men (54 percent to 40 percent) and women (50 percent to 41 percent). He now wins every age group of voters—including those over 65 years of age, who back him over McCain 49 to 43 percent. Supporters of Hillary Clinton, as many as a fifth of whom had at one point told pollsters they'd support McCain over Obama, now back the Democratic nominee 88 percent to 7 percent

2. The economy is only part of it.
What decent person would want to have anything to do with McCain or Palin, especially now?

4. Poor Old John McCain.
The Grab Oil Party done left his wrinkly white ass out there to twist slowly, slowly in the wind--just the way they did with Poor Old Bob Dole.

7. Yeah, everybody knows that
We Need A Steady Hand At the Tiller

Especially now that McInane was helpful enough to point this out repeatedly during the last debate.

8. After this is over there will be a new term - "The McCain Effect"
Outrageous racial and cultural smear tactics leading loyal party voters to defy polling and vote for the opposition in the privacy of the voting booth.

12. Don't celebrate until the 5th of November. Contribute. Work. McCain isn't done yet.
After the election, when we win, then we can celebrate like all get out.

13. Pulling Away Obama opens a double-digit lead in new NEWSWEEK poll

The global financial meltdown has caused a dramatic shift in the 2008 presidential race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. With four weeks left in the presidential campaign, Barack Obama now leads John McCain by double digits, 52 percent to 41 percent among registered voters—a marked shift from the last NEWSWEEK poll, conducted one month ago, when the two candidates were tied at 46 percent.

Underlying Obama's surge in support: An historic boiling over of dissatisfaction with the status quo. An astounding 86 percent of voters now say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, while a mere 10 percent say they are satisfied. 15. I think it's more than that ...

I have no scientific proof of it at this point. (I might add, neither does anyone else really. The economy is a default, obvious subject.)

But, in my personal observations, some people I know who are generally apolitical have gotten fired up recently, not about the economy, but about Palin's obvious stupidity and, more importantly, McCain's nastiness. I've heard more people mention his little quip at the debate the other night suggesting the guy who asked a question had never heard of Fannie Mae before recently. These sorts of things have made them take notice, and when they look around, they see Obama, who is saying the right things and not being an all-out pile of dung bastard, and they think, "Yeah ... I'd vote for that guy, but not the angry old man with the chippie following him around pretending she knows something."

Put succinctly, Obama is attracting people to him while McCain is pushing them away.

16. As long as Obama has at least an 8 point lead in nearly every poll, there's no way the Republicans..
can try to steal the election and claim Bradley effect, or improper polling to hide their shenanigans.

18. Obama leads McCain solidly in two national polls
Some good bits ...

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 46 percent, John McCain 39 percent

OF INTEREST: Obama's lead in this poll is about the same as in late September. Having Joe Biden as Obama's running mate makes people 11 percentage points likelier to support the Democrats, while McCain's choice of Sarah Palin is an 8-point drag on the Republican ticket. Half say the economy is the election's top issue, with no other problem coming close. More trust Obama than McCain with handling the economy, 50 percent to 35 percent, including a majority of independents. More view Obama favorably than unfavorably by 26 points; the difference is half that for McCain. More expect Obama than McCain to win the election by a 3-to-1 margin.

---

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 52 percent, John McCain 41 percent

OF INTEREST: A month ago, Obama and McCain were tied at 46 percent apiece in this poll. Whites and independents are about evenly split, while Obama leads among both sexes and every age group, including those 65 and over. Four in 10 think McCain's campaign has been too negative, four times the number who say so about Obama's. The Democrat has a solid lead as the candidate who'd do better with the economy and the financial crisis, and the one likelier to bring change. Thirty-four percent say Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, makes them likelier to vote for McCain while 64 percent say she does not.

19. My fear
is that people will become complacent and think this is a done deal and not bother to get out and vote.

We still need every single one of us to cast a vote!
