Former Republican senator criticizes McCain, supports Obama
Source: The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican U.S. senator from Rhode Island, is throwing his support behind Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, saying he is disillusioned with Republican John McCain.

"Sen. Obama is the first Democrat I've ever voted for," Chafee said during a stop in Grand Rapids this morning.

He criticized McCain for pandering to the Republican Party's right wing, a strategy he said is dividing the nation and would make it difficult for McCain to govern.

Chafee is one of the republicans that the right wing has always hated.

1. Yeah, but...
....if he votes for Obama on an electronic vote counting machine, he may actually vote for McCain and not even know it.

Of course there is this thread: Obama IS going to win, but...:

2. Our own republican ex-congressman Jim Leach endorsed Obama too...
It didn't win him any brownie points with the state GOP either. Sad part is, it's the only noteworthy thing he ever did.

3. Linc Chafee is a great guy, a dying breed
A socially responsible Republican who thinks. He was very well respected by voters in Rhode Island, a predominantly Democratic state.

Not surprising at all to see this endorsement. Way to go, Linc.

He always stuck out like a sore thumb.. one of the few logical, sane people in the Republican party.

4. I sincerely feel sorry for the "Republicans" of yesterday....
...they are NOT the Nazi/fascist/neocon repug's of today. Their party has morphed into a monster, bent on destroying this nation, raping the resources, people and our future. We truly are being controlled by a monster government...hell bent on this religious war against Muslims and hatred toward people of opposition. We are a very, very sick nation....thanks to reagon and this jack ass in the White House today.

Chafee is one of the last of the liberal wing of the Republican Party, the liberal wing whom helped LBJ get his civil rights bills through Congress over the objections of the Dixiecrats.

Now the GOP is a mix of Palaeocons, Neocons, and the religious right.
