Obama holds advertising advantage over McCain
Source: Assciated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama spent $3.3 million in TV advertising on Monday. At that rate the Democrat will spend more than $90 million on ads through Election Day — more than all the money Republican rival John McCain has to spend on his entire fall campaign.

McCain's ad spending Monday totaled about $900,000 and the Republican National Committee weighed in with about $700,000 worth.

All whopping numbers, but the disparity between Obama and the Republicans is so wide that it has allowed Obama to spend in more states than McCain, to appear more frequently in key markets and to diversify his message by both attacking McCain and promoting his own personal story.

With national and state polls showing him building a broader lead over McCain, Obama has switched to a more positive pitch. Last week, only 34 percent of his ads attacked McCain directly while virtually all of McCain's ads attacked Obama, according to a study by the Wisconsin Advertising Project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

As of September 21 McCain had $36 million cash on hand and Obama had $77 million. McCain is limited to spending the public funds he has already accepted, but Obama is not subject to fundraising constraints.

5. I wonder if McBroke is too dumb to save some for the last 2 weeks before the election?
That's when you get the most bang for your bucks with ads. But since he's slipping in the polls now so badly, what's a poor McLoser to do? Decisions, decisions....

And check it out, the RNC is being forced to chip in, which means they aren't able to give as much to those GOP Senators who are hanging by a thread. :D

3. Seriously, this is serious
It may seem unseemly to discuss the brass tacks of campaign finance, and the possibility that Obama can buy the election, but campaign fundraising and financial management of those funds does demonstrate the candidate's capabilities. And McCain screwed up. He accepted the financial limitations of matching funds, after proving incapable of raising as much money as his opponent. Obama has not only taken a lead amongst voters in the polls, he's taken a big, big lead amongst campaign contributors. That speaks to the depth and enthusiasm of his support.

As a practical matter, it means McCain has almost no chance to catch up. And Obama will pull further ahead. And he will win traditionally "red" states. Any day now, I'm expecting to hear Virginia is officially "leaning Obama." At that point, we'll start hearing McCain's campaign described with unflattering adjectives such as "faltering," "floundering," and "failing." Maybe even some that don't start with "F." "Inept," "embarrassing," and "disastrous" come to mind.

7. I hear a lot of whining about this
All the wingnuts I know (and why do I know so many?) are whining that Obama's buying the election. And then I ask nicely if they've donated to McCain.

10. Really?
I'm in the Boston-area and I mostly see McCain ads which is surprising considering that our media market includes New Hampshire. That and pro-John Sununu ads. I thought the DSCC had a huge money advantage over then RSCC.
