PRINCE Charles paid a surprise visit to Iraq on Sunday, strolling around one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces to inspect British troops and share a traditional Arabic coffee with local dignitaries.
The Prince flew to the southern city of Basra, becoming the first member of the royal family to visit Iraq.
Charles thanked British troops for their work in Iraq when he met more than 200 soldiers from the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment.

Charles met US administrator L. Paul Bremer, the top American official in Iraq, and Sir Jeremy Greenstock, the top Briton, during his five-hour visit.

Charles' staff only allowed journalists to report that he'd been to Iraq after he flew out of the country for an unspecified destination.
"We don't normally take the prince to places as dangerous as this," said a spokesman for Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son. "The troops need cheering up. Hopefully this will make a difference."
