Kingston Trio's Nick Reynolds, 75, dies.

Thu Oct 2, 9:19 PM ET

SAN DIEGO - Nick Reynolds, a founding member of the Kingston Trio who jump-started the revival folk scene of the late 1950s and paved the way for artists such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, has died. He was 75.

Reynolds had been hospitalized with acute respiratory disease and other illnesses, and died Wednesday in San Diego after his family took him off life support, said son Joshua Reynolds.

"Dad was so happy he turned people onto music in a way that people could really approach it, in a simple and honest way," Josh Reynolds told The Associated Press. "He was a very gracious and loving performer. He was a devoted family man."

10. Credit for preserving that song goes to Aunt Nancy Prather and her nephew
the late, great Frank Proffit.

It took a long time and a lot of lawyers to get the Trio to admit that the song wasn't theirs.

4. in tribute . . .
The Merry Minuet
by Sheldon Harnick

They're rioting in Africa,
They're starving in Spain,
There's hurricanes in Florida,
And Texas needs rain.

This whole world is festering
With unhappy souls,
The French hate the Germans,
The Germans hate the Poles,
Italians hate Yugoslavs,
South Africans hate the Dutch --
And I don't like anybody very much.

Bu-u-u-ut . . .
We must't we can be tranquil
And thankful and proud,
For Man's been endowed
With a mushroom-shaped cloud.
And we can be certain
That some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off . . . .
And we will all be blown away! :nuke:

They're rioting in Africa,
There's strife in Iran,
What Nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our Fellow Man.
RIP, Nick . . . and thanks for the tunes . . . :yourock:

5. I started playing guitar at age 13 because of these guys
and others like them, one of the few things I have consistantly enjoyed throughout my life.
I still have 3 or 4 guitars and a bass sitting around my living room.
Thanks to the folkies - they brought American music back to life, and revitalized rock and blues.

Recommended this post - thanks for posting.

Oh, tell me, what were their names, tell me, what were their names?
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James?

The Kingston Trio did a great rendition of that Woody Guthrie song "The Sinking of the Reuben James"

7. I remember hearing Tom Dooley when I was a kid..
But it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I listened to their other songs and became a big fan.
Their music helped to expose me to more of the folk music of that era.

8. RIP
They didn't jump- start the folk scene. They contibuted to it by recording dreadful but acceptable white syrupy folk music which bore little or no resemblance to the original music or words. The New Lost City Ramblers, who preceeded The Kingston Trio, actually contributed far more but most of you will only now be familiar with the name Mike Seeger. Tom Paley , another in the group , still plays over here in the UK - wonderful guy and may he live forever.

12. Awe, they were fun to listen to. My older brother is going to be so bummed.
I remember stealing my older brother's records which included The Kinston Trio. Although they were a little before my time, their songs and humor were fun.

One joke, I think Reynolds made was really corny - so much so, I never forgot it: "On my wedding night, I could not sleep a wink .................... so I switched to Sanka." :P :silly:

And through the open window she gives Charlie a sandwich
As the train goes rumbling through

Charlie gets on at Kendall Square, but his wife passes him the sandwich at Scollay Square station. I commuted on the T for years when there were still exit fare on the Newton stations of the Riverside line and the southern Red Line extension.

This song was a persistent earworm. :+

The T named their new automated pass card the "Charlie card."

23. And another kick for "Scotch & Soda"
RIP Nick.

Scotch and soda, jigger of gin
Oh what a state you've got me in
Oh my, do I feel high?

Scotch and soda, mud in your eye
Baby do I feel high, oh me oh my
Do I feel high

People won't believe me
They'll think that I'm just braggin'
But I could feel the way I do
And still be on the wagon

All I need is one of your smiles
The sunshine of your eye, oh me oh my
Do I feel high
Give me lovin' and baby I feel high

Bake

31. Let me tell you the story of a man named Charlie....
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket,
Kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the MTA

Charlie handed in his dime
At the Kendall Square Station
And he changed for Jamaica Plain
When he got there the conductor told him,
"One more nickel."
Charlie could not get off that train.

Chorus:
Did he ever return,
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearn'd
He may ride forever
'neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned.

Now all night long
Charlie rides through the station
Saying, "What will become of me?
How can I afford to see
My sister in Chelsea
Or my cousin in Roxbury?"

Charlie's wife goes down
To the Scollay Square station
Every day at quarter past two
And through the open window
She hands Charlie a sandwich
As the train comes rumblin' through.

...

Now you citizens of Boston,
Don't you think it's a scandal
That the people have to pay and pay
Vote for Walter A. O'Brien
Fight the fare increase!
And fight the fare increase
Vote for George O'Brien!
Get poor Charlie off the MTA.

Chorus:
Or else he'll never return,
No he'll never return
And his fate will be unlearned
He may ride forever
'neath the streets of Boston
He's the man (Who's the man)
He's the man who never returned.
He's the man (Oh, the man)
He's the man who never returned.
He's the man who never returned.

32. This verse reminded me of the question I asked
when I was kid listening to this song

Charlie's wife goes down
To the Scollay Square station
Every day at quarter past two
And through the open window
She hands Charlie a sandwich
As the train comes rumblin' through.

Why doesn't she hand him a nickle instead of the sandwich?

Wonder how many of you asked the same question.....

38. The Kingston Trio and the Limelighters were part of the soundtrack of my high school years...
I was a true-blue folkie, and they were a wonderful beginning place. Mention a title and I think I can still sing any of their tracks by heart. The person who posted the lyrics for Scotch and Soda has brought tears to my eyes -- that was my high school boyfriend all over, a great kid who was practically 40 at the age of 17, lol.

May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, sweet singer.
