Delays, huge costs threaten ground zero rebuild

NEW YORK - It's going to take longer — and cost a lot more than earlier estimated — to replace the office towers, transportation links and cultural spaces at the World Trade Center site.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in a report being released Thursday, is expected to delay a multibillion-dollar transit hub it is building until 2014 and stagger the schedules for four planned office towers to the needs of the commercial real estate market.

Responding to public pressure by the mayor and the governor, the agency that owns the 16-acre site is expected to prioritize the memorial to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and commit to opening the reflecting pools that mirror the twin towers' footprints by the 10th anniversary.....

I can't believe that more than seven years later they don't even have a memorial, let alone buildings.

2. I can't lay this at the feet of Bush....
this is straight NY/NJ bureaucracy. Same reasons that all construction moves at a snails pace in NY. Same reason the crane inspectors are all bribed to grease the wheels.

7 World Trade was open for business in 2006. That was built privately.
