13. Avian flu first found in Vietnam, I think
and now has involved eight countries: Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, and now China. Taiwan and Pakistan have reported poultry outbreaks of weaker avian flu viruses.

9. Oh, GEEZ!
I just got over beef withdrawal!

Okay, anyone, give me the bad news on pork and lamb. I already know about fish, but I'll be damned if a little mercury & PCB poisoning is going to make me forsake salmon.

10. I read that the strain of flu in the Delaware birds
was not the same strain as the one killing people in SE Asia. But man this shit is scary:scared:

11. Bird flu is common
It's just that the H5N1 (or whatever it is -- the SE Asian one) strain is particularly virulent in birds and can be caught by people. The one that's in the US cannot be transmitted to people.

Then it will be.
The question is, when?

14. WHO has found that the H5N1 is NOT transmissible to humans
Avian influenza A(H5N1) - update 19

6 February 2004

Investigation of possible human-to-human transmission in Viet Nam: new data are reassuring

WHO has today received the results from studies of two viruses taken from members of a family cluster of H5N1 infection in Viet Nam. The family cluster has been under investigation as the first possible instance of limited human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 avian influenza strain. Virus genetic materials from two fatal cases in this cluster – sisters aged 23 and 30 years – have now been fully sequenced by the Government Virus Unit of Hong Kong’s Department of Health. Both viruses are of avian origin and contain no human influenza genes.

This finding, which indicates that the virus has not changed to a form easily transmitted from one person to another, is consistent with earlier findings from epidemiological investigations. No illness has been reported in other family members, in the local community, or in health workers involved in care of these patients.
