McCain’s gay Q&A
Source: Washington Blade

Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told the Blade in an exclusive written interview this week that he appreciates the Log Cabin Republicans’ decision to endorse him, and he hopes “gay and lesbian Americans will give full consideration to supporting me.”

McCain’s decision to answer questions submitted to him in writing marks the first known time a Republican presidential nominee has agreed to an interview with a gay publication.

McCain reiterated his long-held position that he would leave it up to military leaders to decide whether the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law should be retained or repealed. But he suggested that he would support a “review” of the policy.

... Blade: What are your thoughts on the Matthew Shepard Act?

McCain: I have voted against the proposal several times. Let me make it clear that no one should face violence because of who they are. It’s un-American and morally repugnant. People who commit any violent crime should face tough penalties. However, I am not convinced that this is properly a federal issue, or that criminal sentences for terrible crimes should be longer because of the views of the perpetrator or the identity of the victim.

1. Translation
Translation: You'll get nothing and probably a rollback of the rights you already have.

Guys, I know Obama isn't perfect, I wish he took stronger pro-gay stances but an Obama administration is unlikely to be as actively anti-gay as a McCain administration. And as for Palin, yeesh...

6. "I am not convinced this is a federal issue"
So, if you feel safe in San Francisco, stay there, and don't venture anywhere else in the country, because John McCain doesn't think your civil rights should be guaranteed by law, but by geography.

Anyone have the information on whether John McCain thought gay marriage was a "federal issue"? And if a criminal sentence shouldn't take into account the views of the perpetrator or the identity of the victim, is he working to make all killing, accidental or deliberate, subject to the same penalty? Dead is dead, right John? Doesn't matter if you accidentally backed over your kid with a car, killed another person in self defense, killed another person in a flash of anger, or meticulously planned out their execution.

Right, John? Is that what you're saying?

8. Gay Republicans are so pathetic.
So desperate and sniveling. I was at a gay bar and a casual acquaintance admitted that he would be voting for McCain because he wants his money. That's what it boils down to for him, but the fool didn't seem to realize that his $35,000 a year income hardly puts him in the ruling class elite whose interests are defended by the Republicans. Now I can't even talk to him. I suffer no fools.

9. So he doesnt believe in hate crimes.
many violent crimes are done our of hate, not just of an ethnicity or sexual orientation but general hate for a person. To say that people who kill gay people because they are gay is not a federal issue is insane. The killing of people is a federal issue, be them gay, black, white, jewish or whatever, if an American is killed it should be a federal matter. I live in Alabama, there are plenty of people down here that would agree with McCain, which is why it should be a federal matter. If all laws were left up to the states, the poor south (ie. not Georgia, Florida or Tennessee) would be a midevil tribal area.

States on the other hand should be able to decide whether to legalize weed, personal choice should not be the governments decision, but murder should be..
